Officers said the crime categories are slightly different from those reported by Statistics Cana- da each year, due to report- ing requirements, time and data manipulation processes utilized by Statistics Canada. The Halton police annual performance report also dis- cussed progress in their ef- forts to reduce the number offorts to reduce the number off break-ins taking place annu- ally in Oakville, noting addi- tional police resources, a public awareness campaign and other initiatives resulted in the number of break-ins declining by 15 per cent in 2018. The report also noted robberies in Oakville dropped by 28 per cent in 2018, with police noting there were 29 arrests and 141 crimi- nal charges laid by the Oak- ville robbery team. The work of the Halton police forensic services unit was another topic discussed in the annual report. The unit completed more than 2,600 unique forensic scene examinations in 2018, which resulted in 149 offenders be- ing linked to crime scenes through fingerprints and 103 offenders being linked to crimes through DNA sam- ples that were collected and identified. The Halton police intelli- gence bureau's offender management co-ordinator also had a busy year moni- toring high risk parolees and registered sex offenders. The report noted that last year 12 registered sex offenders and two parolees were found not to be complying with the con- ditions of their release and/ or committing new offences. They were charged accord- ingly. The high level of mental health calls Halton police re- spond to also became clear from this report. The Haltonfrom this report. The Haltonf police mobile crisis rapid re- sponse team attended a total of 1,943 events in 2018, with 1,111 of these being related to mental health. This team's intervention resulted in 557 mental health apprehen- sions, including 227 in Oak- ville, 167 in Burlington, 92 in Milton and 66 in Halton Hills. Police said 64 individuals were safely diverted from emergency rooms and 633 in- dividuals were connected to services in the community. The Halton police crisis out- reach and support team re- sponded to 533 calls in 2018, of which 465 were related to mental health. It made 66 mental health apprehen- sions. The Halton police colli- sion reconstruction unit was kept busy on Halton's roads during 2018, responding to 12 traffic fatalities. It assumed control of 16 collision investi- gations in which the level of injury was determined to be serious or life-altering. The unit also investigated two non-criminal deaths that occurred on local rail- road tracks. Although hu- man trafficking may seem like something that happens in larger communities, Hal- ton police emphasize it does take place here. During 2018, the drug and human traffick- ing unit charged 16 individu- als with 107 criminal charges related to human trafficking. NEWS Continued from page 15
