Born January 16, 1925 in Yorkshire England to Frank and Florence Garside (nee Carne-Jenkins), he leaves behind his wife of 70 years Joan Garside (nee Moulding) and his three daughters Anne Fuller (Nigel), Jane Garside-Foy (Bill) and Lori Garside Labelle (Bertrand). His darling daughter, Julia Kinder, predeceased him. He had a special and unique relationship with all his grandchildren, Julia Schwab (Eric), Andrew Stewart (Brandi), Jessica Brown (John), Alexander Makielski (Michelle), Ryan Sarfeld (Kristin) and Paul Labelle (Sonia); and delighted in his great-grandchildren Madeline, Jonah, Maya, Colin, Emma, Dylan and his step-great-grandson Caleb. He is survived by his sister Pam Lynch, cousin Barbara Jeremiah (nee Garside) and nephews David Garside and Peter Lynch and niece Susan Bowie (nee Garside). His brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Winnifred Garside predeceased him. As a young man during WWII he joined the Royal Navy and sailed the seven seas, survived the Bombay explosion and remarkably made it back to England in one piece. He immigrated to Canada soon after and met his future wife on his first evening in Oakville! In the early years, he worked three jobs to support his family. John was a natural leader and an inquisitive learner with a twinkle in his eye, accounting for a good deal of his success in business. Soon he found what was to became his niche, Quality Control management, initially with Orenda Engines assigned to the test cells for the CF-105 Arrow jetfighter, then on to Studebaker bringing home spanking new designs to test-drive, Massey Ferguson taking his family between Canada and the US, and QC consulting to the automotive and aeronautical engineering sectors. Meanwhile, anything Joan could dream up, he jumped on board: figure skating, forming wonderful memories ice dancing with his daughters; when Lori became involved with horses, he joined in whole heartedly, galloping around on his crazy horse Tonka terrifying and delighting those around him, and becoming the diligent driver - trailering horses hither and yon. And then there was music: an avid lover of classical music, he had a fine bass voice singing in both church and community choirs, and to his family's delight would serve up endless verses of British ditties and hilarious recitations of Stanley Holloway monologues. When the grandchildren and greats came along, he delighted them with his mischievous and playful nature and gifts as a story teller. After raising his family, perhaps his greatest passion was realized with many happy years spent with Joan on their sailboats, the Unicorn and later Levitas. The family wishes to thank the wonderful Palliative staff at the Oakville Hospital for the deeply compassionate care extended to John and his family in his final days. Special thanks also to the wonderful care providers at The Kensington in Oakville for the playful and gentle care they provided him on a daily basis. His love for the people in his life was tender and deeply felt and he will be greatly missed. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block east of Kerr St.) on June 1st at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m. Interment will be private and for family only.
