"Matters raised by the public included concern re- lated to light from the build- ing shining into the resi- dential dwellings located south of the property and potential noise concerns re- lated to the parking lot," said Dalrymple. Ward 6 town Coun. Na- talia Lishchyna said a near- by business has concerns bylaws surrounding a re- spite care facility may in- terfere with the business' operations, which can be loud at times. Emma West, a lawyer representing Acclaim Health, pointed out there are residences immediately south of the proposed de- mentia care centre and as such that business would have to adhere to appropri- ate noise bylaws even if the centre was not there. During the meeting councillors heard from sev- eral residents who have family members with de-family members with de-f mentia. They talked about the importance of centre's like the one being proposed. Anthony James said his loved one Molly has been attending Acclaim's adult day program since January 2015. "Participants enjoy time with others while care- givers have peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe and having fun," said James. "Respite care from time to time is necessary. It lets you temporarily step away from your role as a care-from your role as a care-f giver so you can have a rest and rebuild your strength. If you do not have this, you will suffer the consequenc- es." Alie Amaral said she and her sisters have been looking after their mother since 2017. She described the diffi- culties of looking after someone with dementia while working a full-time job and caring for her own family.family.f "This journey has been truly exhausting for my sis- ters and I and extremely difficult to manage given mom's ongoing anxiety at- tacks, her inability to cook for herself, to care for her-for herself, to care for her-f self- including her own per- sonal hygiene. There is lit- tle self-awareness," said Amaral. "Mom rotates living with my sisters and I on a weekly basis because quite frankly this is all we canfrankly this is all we canf manage. You see after a week of caring for mom, we need a break from her. It saddens me to say this, but it is the truth... The Acclaim day program has been a huge relief for my sisters and I because we can go to work, concentrate on what we have to do while know- ing that mom is safe and happy with people who know her." Amaral said when she and her sisters learned of the proposed Oakville de- mentia care facility and the overnight respite care it will be offering, she says they were elated because if it is permitted, they will have the option of getting reprieve at night. "This overnight care is so necessary because as a caregiver I know how des- perate I am at the end of the week -when my mom is with me in my home - to have a break from her care," said Amaral. "The new facility will provide for all families who desperately need a mean- ingful break from caregiv- ing overnight." Local health care profes- sional Mary Lui said the proposed facility would bring innovative dementia care to Oakville. She said currently there is no overnight respite care for dementia patients avail-for dementia patients avail-f able within this community meaning affected families are forced to seek this ser- vice in Hamilton and Peel. "This new facility will remedy the biggest service gap in Halton and improve the quality of life of many seniors and their families," said Lui. Acclaim Health pointed out there is no shortage of need for this facility. They said on their web- site that over the next 12 years, Halton's older adult population will increase by 90 per cent while rates of de- mentia will increase by 66 per cent. With comments from the public heard council voted to receive the infor- mation. Town staff will examine the proposal and comments and then recommend to council at a later date whether the proposal should be approved or re- fused.fused.f NEWS Continued from page 6 A dementia care facility has been proposed for 2250 Speers Rd.
