Luisi, said the group's candidate, John David Meaney, was treated un- fairly during the event.fairly during the event.f Luisi says when the group tried to make ar- rangements with the town to set up a booth at the park they were told booths were only available to sitting, in- cumbent MPs. He said the town also told them brochures were not allowed due to the town's zero waste policy. Luisi said the group did get permission to attend the event in branded T- shirts and hand out promo- tional items to attendees. "On the day of the event, we attended as a group and proceeded to hand out free balloons to passersby while Mr. Meaney greeted attendees and gave a brief introduction of himself and our party's platform," said Luisi. "Shortly afterwards we were approached by a town representative who told us that we'd have to stop, or we'd be asked to leave the park. If we didn't do so, we'd be escorted out by the police. We were disap- pointed, but we did what was asked of us." Luisi said the group lat- er learned that other non- incumbent candidates in the upcoming federal elec- tion were present in the park and seemed to be do- ing the same things the PPCs had been doing. When reached for com- ment Jane Courtemanche, director of strategy, policy and communications with the Town of Oakville ac- knowledged the town made a mistake that day. "Town staff at the event were not aware of Elec- tions Canada require- ments related to candi- dates, and as a result we apologize for not allowing the PPC candidate to par- ticipate in the event," she said. "The other candidates were there as part of ap- proved booths for the sit- ting MPs and MPPs so this did create confusion. We have set up a team to re- view the town's special events policy and parks by- law requirements to en- sure we address this con- cern for future events." Courtemanche said Oakville Liberal MP John Oliver and local Progres- sive Conservative MPPs Stephen Crawford and Ef- fie Triantafilopoulous hadfie Triantafilopoulous hadf booths at the Oakville Can- ada Day event. She said Oakville Con- servative Party of Canada candidate Terence Young had a booth as a Bronte business owner, not as a candidate, and as such did not display campaign ma- terial at his booth. Courtemanche said all incumbent and non-in- cumbent candidates would have been asked not to hand out printed materials as part of the Town's zero waste policy for events. In a Twitter reply to the town's acknowledgement of the error Oakville PPC thanked the town for re- sponding, but said they feel this goes beyond the staff at the event making a mis- take. "As such, we have filed a formal complaint withformal complaint withf Elections Canada," the statement reads. "We also have contacted @OakvilleMayor directly with our concerns and await a response from him."
