From Nov. 16-23, the YMCA of Oakville, together with YMCAs across Canada, celebrates the presence of peace in our communities, and reflects on the peace- building work that happens all year both inside and out- side the YMCA. 1. YMCA Peace Week offers activities that help children, youth and adults explore peace from personal, communityfrom personal, communityf and global perspectives. 2. YMCAs in Canada ask people to: Build community. Act for peace. 3. Peace-building is core to the YMCA's commitment to strengthening the founda- tion of healthy communities and part of the YMCA of Oakville's year-round pro- grams. 4. When people act for peace, they build communi- ty by promoting a sense of belonging, fostering empa- thy and embracing diversity - Teresa Rinaldi, manager, community initiatives 5. The highlight of this week is the presentation of the YMCA Peace Medal to an individual or group who, without any special resourc- es, demonstrates a commit- ment to peace 6. The ceremony will be held at a Community Break- fast on Wednesday Nov. 20, 7fast on Wednesday Nov. 20, 7f to 9:30 a.m. Tickets on sale now ymcaofoakville.org/ peace. 7. Social Innovation Pro- ject winners will also be an- nounced. The YMCA Social Innovation Project, created in 2018 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the YMCA Peace Medallion in Oakville, aims to inspire youth (ages 13 to 24) and support their desire to build creative solu- tions and respond to com- plex social issues in their community. 8. There will be a Candle- light Walk for Peace on Mon- day, Nov. 18, 6:45 to 8 p.m., leaving from the YMCA at 410 Rebecca St. 9. The walk is a free fami- ly event where everyone in the community is welcome to join us as they explore peace from a local, national and global perspective and walk by candlelight through neighbourhood streets. 10. Hot chocolate will also be provided to warm you up after the walk.
