As she celebrated her 27th birthday in 1997, Mar- tinez, a member of the Roy- al Canadian Air Force, found herself on an inter-found herself on an inter-f national peacekeeping mis- sion to Guatemala, where civil war had raged for 36 years. A history of the war and the role of the mission was relayed by Martinez to an overflow crowd at a special peacekeeping night Nov. 7 at Oakville Museum, an event designed to coincide with the exhibit Preserving Peace: Souvenirs of Peace- keeping. Training included how to detect landmines and how to negotiate the re- lease of prisoners, but as the only female in the 155- member mission - la unica (the only one), as she was known - she ran into some interesting dilemmas among her fellow troops: diplomatically diffusing opinions that she was there to cook and do laundry. She was determined to be out in the field earning her keep, said Martinez, a former Oakville residentformer Oakville residentf FIRST FEMALE UN PEACEKEEPER RECOUNTS HER HARROWING 1997 MISSION TO GUATEMALA KATHY YANCHUS kyanchus@metroland.com Oakville Museum hosted a Peacekeeping Night with a presentation by Eva Martinez - Canada's first female United Nations military observer, who served in Guatemala.
