This past summer we experienced record high water levels in Lake Ontario which caused damage to several shoreline parks across Oakville. The lake level has now dropped and the town will be undertaking a video assessment of the municipal shoreline to investigate any damage that may have occurred due to high water. Between mid-November and mid-December, the town will be using a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV or drone) to take videos of the municipal shoreline. The flight and operations will be handled by DroneBoy, a Transport Canada and NavCanada approved commercial drone operator. The drone being used is a very small, quiet, battery-operated vehicle with an onboard camera. Weather can impact the operation of the drone so it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date, time and location of the work. The drone will fly during daylight hours only and at a low level over the water, close to the shoreline. Questions? Council also directed staff to report backwith options for additional signage to support public education on towing regulations and storage yard fees. On November 11, staff will be reporting back to CSC with proposed amendments to the tow truck and motor vehicle storage yard licensing by-laws. The decision of the CSC will be presented to Council on November 18. Background Following concerns from the public, the town is implementing tow truck and storage yard licensing by-laws beginning January 1, 2020 that will regulate towing prices and ensure that only licensed tow truck companies, including associated trucks/drivers, and vehicle storage yards operate in Oakville. Why tow truck licensing? Tow truck companies provide an essential service in our community. Licensing will help ensure that residents have safe, consistent and reliable options after a collision or breakdown or when their vehicle is towed from private property.
