Despite being in digital format, libraries loan outformat, libraries loan outf ebooks the same way that they do physical books - one copy at a time. Thou- sands of OPL customers regularly borrow ebooks through apps like clou- dLibrary, and with every new release, the library aims to purchase enough copies to serve the needs of the community. However, since Nov. 1, OPL and public libraries across North America are only permitted to pur- chase one copy of any new ebook release from Mac- millan Publishers, and must wait a minimum of eight weeks before they can purchase any addi- tional copies. In a recently published open letter to libraries, Macmillan CEO John Sargent claims that "We are not trying to hurt li- braries; we are trying to balance the needs of the system in a new and com- plex world." However, the reality is that customers will be negatively impacted by longer wait times for ebooks, especially for popular releases from au- thors such as Nora Rob- erts, Jeffrey Archer and Liane Moriarty. With the embargo in place, up- wards of three customers will be able to check out a new ebook (for a three- week loan that OPL of- fers). Before this embar-fers). Before this embar-f go, at least 24 customers could check out one title, because multiple copies would be purchased at once to manage the de- mand. Further adding to this issue, it's significantly more expensive for li- braries to buy an ebook than a physical book. For example, a hardcover copy of Jeffrey Archer's Nothing Ventured cur- rently retails for $25 at In- digo, yet one ebook li- cense will cost Oakville Public Library $60 when purchased from Macmil- lan Publishers. This par- ticular ebook may only be checked out 52 times - or for two years after pur-for two years after pur-f chase, whichever comes first - before the libraryfirst - before the libraryf must purchase a new li- cense. It's time to take a stand against the publisher's decision to limit access to e-content. Oakville Public Libr- ary is inviting those who share these concerns spread the word on social media using the hashtag #eContentForLibraries to demand that major publishers work with li- braries to establish fair pricing models that bene- fit everyone. fit everyone. f Learn more at opl.ca/ news.
