Brissett (Pastor) Email: mjbrisse@yahoo.ca Jesus is lOrd After some hiccups, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is once again scheduled to proceed through downtown Oakville along Lakeshore Road East on Saturday, Nov. 16. Town staff and downtown business own- ers are breathing a collective sigh of relief following a recent announcement that thefollowing a recent announcement that thef parade would follow its traditional route. The parade is now scheduled to begin Saturday, Nov. 16 at 9 a.m., at Lakeshore Road East and Reynolds Street. The parade will proceed west on Lakeshore Road, take a right on Kerr Street and then turn left on Stewart Street. The Town of Oakville had stated during a heated meeting with around 60 downtown merchants on Oct. 23 that parade organiz- ers had decided to avoid the downtown Lakeshore Road area because some con- struction work along the George to Dunn streets section of Lakeshore Road would not be completed by Nov. 15 as scheduled. This revelation did not sit well with the downtown merchants, who have been deal- ing with construction and decreased busi- ness since April and were looking forward to the foot traffic the parade would bring. During that meeting, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said he would speak with the parade organizers and invite them to re- consider. On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Burton confirmed he had spoken with the parade chair and that the parade would again be proceeding through Oakville's downtown, along Lake- shore Road East. "The parade is a generations-old collab- orative project of volunteers and town staff and everyone agreed that with the updated forecast of substantial completion of theforecast of substantial completion of thef construction in time for the parade, it could and should continue on its traditional path," said Burton. During the Oct. 23 meeting, it was noted that while Lakeshore Road East will be ful- ly opened to vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and holiday shoppers on Friday, Nov. 15 there will be temporary walkways in place along the George to Dunn streets section. There are also questions about whether the boulevards in this area will be com- plete. This work is now scheduled for comple- tion when construction resumes in April 2020. News that the parade will make its way through downtown Oakville was well-re- ceived by area merchants. "The Downtown Oakville BIA is ex- tremely pleased that the parade organizers and the Town of Oakville heard our con- cerns and came together to ensure the pa- rade can occur on Lakeshore Road as per its traditional route," said Sharlene Plew- man, executive director of the Downtown Oakville BIA. "The parade is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together to cele-for the community to come together to cele-f brate. The businesses of downtown Oak- ville look forward to welcoming the parade- goers every year." Plewman said this year, the business community is also pleased to showcase to the community the new downtown street- scape, and that easy access to the business- es, parking and amenities (the theatre, the museum and the library) is restored. "We are excited to welcome people back to downtown Oakville and appreciate ev- eryone's support of the downtown busi- nesses to ensure the downtown continues to thrive," she said. Downtown business owner Paul Bar- rington said he is thrilled that the Oakville Santa Claus Parade will be returning to the downtown. "It's important to show that downtown Oakville is open again for business and that the street is open," he said. "It is a long-standing tradition that the Santa Claus Parade goes through down- town Oakville, and we didn't want to see that changed at all." While Barrington is happy to give credit where credit is due, he emphasized that the business community still wants the con- struction work between George and Dunn streets totally completed by Nov. 15 as scheduled. "We don't want it to be resurrected again in 2020," he said. For more information about the parade,For more information about the parade,F visit oakvillesantaclausparade.ca.
