PLUS TAKE AN EXTRA 15%Off The Town of Oakville has thrown its support be- hind the first piece of pro- vincial legislation brought forward by the Green partyforward by the Green partyf by calling for the protection of an essential Ontario wa- ter source. Council voted unani- mously to endorse the pass- ing of Bill 71, the Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act, by the Ontario legislature. Mike Schreiner, Onta- rio's only Green party MPP, first brought forward a pri-first brought forward a pri-f vate member's bill calling for the protection of the Par-for the protection of the Par-f is Galt Moraine in February 2019. The bill passed its sec- ond reading with all party support in March 2019. It's unclear at this time when the bill returns to Queen's Park for its third reading. Schreiner said the Paris Galt Moraine, which ex- tends north to southwest from Caledon to Norfolkfrom Caledon to Norfolkf County, is an essential groundwater source for the Grand River watershed. He noted the huge land feature filters and purifiesfeature filters and purifiesf drinking water in a region expected to grow by more than one million residents by 2041. Schreiner said the mo- raine currently purifies clean drinking water for nearly 200,000 people in southern Ontario. "Guelph is one of the largest cities in Canada to rely solely on groundwater for its water supply. But thisfor its water supply. But thisf is under threat from drought, climate change, urban sprawl and reckless industry," said Schreiner. "If we don't take action now to protect this drinking water source, it could be lost forever." If passed, the Paris Galt Moraine Conservation Act would regulate and restrict land use in the area of the moraine, ensuring its eco- logical health is safeguard- ed. The act would also trig- ger the creation of a conser- vation plan bringing to- gether all stakeholders to protect the moraine for gen- erations to come. "The Town of Oakville believes that the protection of the environment is essen- tial for the health of its citi- zens, the quality of the prov- ince's food and drinking wa- ter, the safeguarding of the habitats of wildlife and the vitality of the province's economy," Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said in a motion to council. "The moraine provides water at no cost to taxpay- ers. Failing to protect the moraine would result in enormous costs of putting infrastructure in place to transport water as well as threaten food security." The motion was second- ed by Ward 3 Coun. Dave Gittings and approved unanimously by council. The vote also called for a copy of the resolution to be sent to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, the Ministry of the Environment, Conser- vation and Parks, the Minis- try of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Oakville North- Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos, Oakville MPP Stephen Crawford, the Ministry of the Environ- ment and Climate Change and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
