It focuses on a hockey coach talking to his young male players. View it at https://you- too.haltonwomensplace.com/ and scroll to the Listen to Your Coach video. In this video, our coach is not focusing on the boys' skating, on their passing or on their goal scoring. At this moment, he is fo- cusing on respect - respect for their moth- ers and the women in their lives. He is focusing on who they are OFF the ice. He knows that is what matters most. I live in a world of hockey with two boys who play and with a husband who helps coach both teams. My husband has coached the kids soccer since they were toddlers, coaches them in football and now in hockey. We, as a family, have encoun- tered great coaches who inspire and moti- vate and coaches who clearly needed to step off the bench and the sidelines. Coaches are important role models to children. I agree with this quote by former NFL player and now minister and motiva- tional speaker, Joe Ehrmann: "I think the great myth in America is that sports builds character. Sports does not build character unless the coach inten- tionally teaches it and models it. When I did start coaching I did not want to be a transactional coach using kids for my own identity. So I started with a simple philoso- phy: if you are going to be a transforma- tional coach you have to know what you are transforming. I coach to help boys be- come men of empathy and integrity who be responsible to change the world for good. That's what sport ought to be about. And we have a lot of work to do in our country." We, at Halton Women' Place, believe coaches in our community and beyond have an incredible opportunity to shape the futures of boys and girls in a unique and impactful way. When a coach like the one in our video talks to his team about respect and how they should act off the ice, it proves to these young individuals that how they act and what they do and say matter and that they have an opportunity to be leaders away from the locker-room. It proves to them that they are valued and that some- one - other than their family - believes in their potential. In the Jan. 13 edition of the National Post a study was featured on how coaches can help reduce dating violence in adoles- cents. "Researchers tested the effectiveness of Coaching Boys Into Men, a program that seeks to prevent dating violence and sexu- al assault by enlisting coaches to speak frankly with middle-school male athletes about how they should - and should not - treat the opposite sex." Altogether, the study involved 973 11- to 14-year old boys. After one year of follow- up, athletes at schools that implemented the program were more than twice as like- ly to report positive bystander behaviours, like intervening when a peer is disrespect- ful to others, compared to athletes at schools that didn't implement the pro- gram. Roughly two-thirds of male athletes had dating experience. Those who went through the program were 76 per cent less likely to be reported as perpetrators of abusive relationship behaviours or sexual violence than their counterparts at schools without the program, according to the results in JAMA Pediatrics. Halton Women's Place is proud to have our own public education program, with three Ontario licensed teachers on staff who go into schools across Halton to teach youth about healthy relationships. We know that the more education boys and girls receive the better the chance at pre- venting abuse within their relationships. Wouldn't it be incredible to have this coaches program in Halton, too? We applaud our youth hockey teams - from high school football teams to the Bur- lington Cougars and Eagles, the Oakville Blades and the Milton Menace - for part- nering with HWP on a variety of initiatives to spread the awareness to their players and to their communities. A special thank you to the Burlington Eagles, who participated in our hockey #youtoo video. Carm Bozzo is the development manag- er for Halton Women's Place.
