The unique study, Make Every Bite Count, aims to understand the carbon "foodprint" of household food waste and guide the reduction of future impact. HEN is now looking for citizen scientists to participate in phase 2 and fill out the 4-minute survey at www.henwaste.org before February 14. Nikki Wesley/Torstar HEN LOOKING FOR CITIZEN SCIENTISTS A new year offers an op- portunity for a fresh start. Whether you're looking to make good on some of your New Year's resolutions, your New Year's resolutions,y incorporate a new self-care practice, or simply want to start the year off on a posi- tive note, here's a few small (and free!) ways that OPL can help make your 2020 happier and healthier. LIGHT THERAPY LAMPS Research suggests that 15Research suggests that 15R per cent of people experience some form of the "winter blues" during the colder and darker months of the year . One way that you can lessen these seasonal-linked symptoms is with a light therapy lamp - a device that mimics natural, outdoor light. Last year, OPL in- stalled light therapy lamps at our Central, Iroquois Ridge, Glen Abbey and Woodside branches, makingWoodside branches, makingW it easy for Oakville residents to access light therapy for free. The lights are availablefree. The lights are availablef for use on a first-come, first-for use on a first-come, first-f serve basis within each branch. Here's how we rec- ommend using them: • Turn the lamp on and sit, read or work in front of it for about 20-30 minutes perfor about 20-30 minutes perf day. • Position yourself 16-20 inches away from the lamp while you are using it. • Keep your eyes open but do not look directly at the light. MEDITATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH If you're looking to intro- duce a new self-care practice in 2020 but aren't exactly sure where to start, take ad- vantage of our free, drop-in program, Meditation for Mental Health. A peer men- tor from the Canadian Men- tal Health Association (Hal- ton Region Branch) will teach you how to slow the mind and tune out the noise using accessible meditation techniques.
