It's been dimming since last October. Could it mean the star is coming to the end of its life? When it comes to stars, size matters. The bigger the star, the faster it burns through its hydrogen fuel and explodes. Our sun is a typical star with a lifespan of about 10 billion years. Be- telgeuse is a huge, red su- pergiant star and has been around for about 10 million years, but has a shorter li- fespan. fespan. f We know the star will ex-We know the star will ex-W plode one day within the next 100,000 years, but prob- ably not within our life- time. Since it's only 642 light years from Earth, when it does, it will be brighter than the moon. Betelgeuse also varies in brightness every 425 days. Astronomers speculate this dimming could be due to an eruption of gas. Per- haps this dimming also in- dicates some new processes inside the star we don't quite understand yet.
