On Jan. 25 and 28, some- one called Halton police and made claims that dan- gerous criminal acts were taking place at the same Oakville home. At one point, the indi- vidual claimed there was a victim in the house who re- quired immediate emer- gency assistance. Halton police responded in force each time, only to discover the calls were fake. An investigation by the Oakville Criminal Investi- gations Bureau concluded on Wednesday, Feb. 19 with an Oakville resident being arrested and charged with two counts of public mis- chief and two counts of criminal harassment. He cannot be identified because of the Youth Crim- inal Justice Act and has since been released from custody with a future court date. Police said prank calls designed to draw a maxi- mum police response (also known as swatting), pulls 911 dispatchers and com- municators and frontline officers away from a vari- ety of legitimate communi- ty needs. They said the risk to res- idents targeted by these false calls is significant. Anyone with informa- tion about these incidents are asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4747 ext. 2216 or Crime Stoppers at 1- 800-222-TIPS (8477).
