"We were founded over 120 years ago to offer nursing care in homes, but today we are a highly-trusted non-profit organization that provides in-home clinical, personal and social support to adults and children to help people stay in their own homes and live life to the fullest, as well as non-medical support programs such as Meals on Wheels." VON was founded in the late 1890's by Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, wife of Canada's Governor General, when Canada faced a dangerous shortage of nurses, doctors and hospitals. Lady Aberdeen founded an order of visiting nurses in Canada in honour of the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's ascent to the throne. The Order's first challenge was to provide visiting nursing services to isolated areas lacking medical facilities. Today, VON offers dozens of programs and services across Ontario and Nova Scotia with over 6,400 employees and 6,200 volunteers across the two provinces. "In Peel, each VON community support services program supports anywhere between 100 to 500+ individuals each year," adds Kimberly. "We have roughly 70 compassionate staff members and our programs require 200 plus compassionate volunteers. As you can imagine, it takes many volunteers to run programs like Meals on Wheels - to pack the food for delivery and distribution and drivers to deliver the food to client's homes every day. Our volunteers also help with the lunch service and set up of our Senior's Lunch Bunch, a program where we provide a social lunch in the community, mostly at senior's apartment complexes. The cost to participate in these programs is minimal for our clients. We could not run programs like these without the support of our volunteers, funders, donors and our committed staff who are involved in every aspect of what we do in homes and in the community." VON is actively looking for volunteers to help serve or pack meals, deliver meals and make in-home social visits. Volunteers can make a tremendous difference in enriching people's lives, and by being that ray of hope on their doorstep when they need it the most. "Our motto is Live Every Day and these programs align with our mission - to help people live in their homes and communities by delivering the caring support that our clients and their families need." In-home care is also provided by daily visits from a PSW, along with social visits made by volunteers. "Our Supports for Daily Living program is not the typical home care model- we offer short, intermittent visits throughout the day to help with things like grooming, meal preparation and security checks, rather than staying for an hour or two at a time," says Kimberly. The VON SMART® program is an acronym for Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together. Fitness instructors work one-on-one with high risk seniors who can't attend group exercise programs and who have had a recent decline in functional mobility. In-home service is delivered by a fitness instructor twice a week for six weeks to help clients improve functional abilities. Asked what she is most proud of in terms of the work being done by VON in the Peel Region, Kimberly replies; "I am most proud of our staff and our volunteers for their passion and dedication to making a difference to the lives of others, and in our community. I am proud of the services we offer to support people and seeing how people are benefitting from the work we do. I am proud that collectively we are delivering on the vision of VON in helping people live life to the fullest." This affects funds sold using the Deferred Sales Charge (DSC) method. Let's review the DSC basic- s.A mutual fund company pays a selling commission at the time of a sale. Exit fees are paid if the investor sells the fund within seven years. The Ontario Securities Com- mission (OSC) issued a press release outlining a public proposal to gather input before making any fi- nal decision. Sale of DSC mutual funds would be prohibited to those aged 60 and older, or who have an investment time horizon shorter than the DSC schedule. A DSC fund cannot be used to pur- chase an investment with borrowed money, or an amount above $50,000. Liquidity is being en- hanced for investors. The maximum DSC schedule is limited to three years, al- lowing investors to with- draw 10 per cent of the val- ue of the fund every calen- dar year. Investor circumstances can change, and the DSC schedule reduction from seven years to three years addresses regulator-con- sidered weaknesses in the current system. If a client suffers hardship like losing full-time employment, be- coming ill or disabled, then withdraws from a mutual fund, they would pay no ex- it fee. The proposed date to im- plement these rules is June 1, 2022.DSC mutual fund sales have been a point of discussion for many years. The Canadian Securities Administrator was propos- ing all DSC sales be banned. Ontario previously was in agreement to the ban, but after the last provincial election this position was reversed. Investors, how- ever, still have a choice. Many funds are sold on a front end, low load, fee- based and with a DSC op- tion. Individuals should edu- cate themselves on the most suitable options for their needs. Peter Watson is regis- tered with Aligned Capital Partners Inc. (ACPI) to provide investment advice.
