Statistics Canada (2015) reported that 78 per cent of people aged 60-79 have some degree of hearing loss. Many people live their lives without knowing that they have a loss. Why is that? Typically, this process happens gradually, you do not just wake up one day with dimin- ished hearing levels. Over time, both the individual with the hearing loss and their loved ones adapt to the reduced hearing acuity. This can leave an individual undiagnosed for many years. In fact, on average, people wait approximately seven years to get a hearing test and hearing aids once they start to notice a problem. Having an untreated hearing loss has many negative health consequences such as social isola- tion, depression, increased risk of dementia, increased risk of falls, and impaired memory. Here are indicators of when it is time for a hearing as- sessment: • If you are you complaining that people are con- stantly mumbling. This is usually the first indicator • If you are avoiding restaurants, places of worship, or social gatherings • If loved ones are complaining that the volume on the TV or radio is too loud • If you are asking people to repeat themselves • If you are having difficulty hearing over the phone • If you are 60 years of age and over If you have been thinking about getting your hearing tested or trying a hearing device, but are hesitant to do so, South Oakville Hearing and Audiology Clinic invites you to come out to its "TRY IT AT TEN" event on Wednes- day May 6 at 10 a.m. at Tribeca Coffee Co. downtown Oakville.
