Damoff held a roundtable with about 10 members of the Oakville Chinese Residents' Association at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex on March 3 to discuss the impacts of the novel coronavirus on the Chi- nese community in Canada and within Halton. Those present heard from Oakville resident Li Meynen Xue, who is co-chair of a group. She said her association is helping 35 Halton families, mostly in Oak- ville, who have recently travelled to China and are now undergoing a self-imposed 14-day quarantine. The Canadian government has asked that anyone returning from Hubei Province, which is at the centre of the coronavirus out- break, to self-isolate for 14 days. But, Xue said many people re- turning from other parts of China are also choosing to quarantine themselves out of an abundance of caution. "They are sacrificing their freedom and income for the sake of the public's safety," said Xue. "It's very admirable. That's why our volunteers are here to help them as much as we can." Xue said that since the start of the outbreak her group, which now consists of about 100 volun- teers, has been helping these families by bringing them grocer- ies and providing a variety of oth- er services. The group advertises on the Chinese social media app We- Chat. There is no contact with the isolated families for something like delivering groceries. Xue said the family provides a grocery list and pays for the gro- ceries electronically.
