Sharon Yu had been vis- iting family in China for more than a year and re- turned to Canada on Satur- day, Feb. 22. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Canadian government is advising travellers who have visited Hubei province, China to self-isolate for 14 days starting the day they begin their journey to Canada. Yu said she wasn't expe- riencing any symptoms and was visiting a different Chinese province, but even so felt isolating herself within her Speers Road condo was a good idea. The Oakville Beaver spoke with Yu via phone on day 13 of her of her isolation. "It has gotten a bit bor- ing," said Yu through an in- terpreter. "At the beginning, it was okay. Now I'm feeling a bit bored." Yu said she was neverYu said she was neverY concerned she might have coronavirus. She said her last month in China saw the Chinese government more or less "shut down the coun- try" with restrictions placed on people's movements and the closing of schools and workplaces. As a result, Yu said she was essentially iso- lated before she ever got to Canada. She also pointed out that prior to getting on the plane to Canada, offi- cials at the airport checked her for coronavirus symp- toms -- something which she said was not done when she arrived in Canada. Even so, Yu noted the possibility existed of her having come into contact with someone with corona- virus -- particularly while she was at the airport in China and on the plane. "For the safety of the public, I wanted to do this," said Yu. The 42-year-old said, prior to leaving China, she connected with an Oak- ville-based volunteer group within the Chinese community that delivers groceries and provides other services to Halton people in self-isolation. She said the group made it possible for her to main- tain her isolation, noting she would have had to go out and purchase food were it not for them. Yu is one of more than 30 Halton households the group says they are assist- ing with self-isolation. While spending 14 days alone and confined to your home is not ideal, Yu said it really hasn't been all that challenging. She said she has passed the time by watching tele- vision, cooking and doing other assorted work around the condo. "The internet lets you stay close to people," said Yu. "I can still conveniently talk to people and see peo- ple that way, so being alone isn't really a problem." Yu said she is not cur- rently employed, and not going to work was not the issue for her that it has been for others. The Oakville woman said she has taken her self- isolation very seriously, only opening the door of her condo to pick up the groceries the volunteers have left on her door- step. She said the whole en- deavour would be mean- ingless to do anything less. With the end of her iso- lation in sight when inter- viewed on March 6, and Yu still symptom-free, she talked about the first thing she planned to do when she leaves her condo. "I'm going to go down to Lake Ontario and go for a walk by the lake," she said.
