Halton police are now reporting that a 15-year-old boy, who was arrested follow- ing the stabbing of a 79-year-old Oakville woman, has been charged with attempted murder. The York Region youth, who police are not naming because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has also been charged with breaking and entering with intent. Police were called to a Melvin Drive res- idence on Wednesday, June 3 just after 8 a.m., after receiving a 911 call reporting that an elderly woman had been attacked. Det. Omar Nadim of the Oakville Crimi- nal Investigations Unit said a motorist had been driving by when they saw the injured woman and stopped to provide assistance. When officers arrived, they discovered a 79-year-old woman with serious injuries consistent with a stabbing. She was transported to hospital, where she remains in stable condition. The suspect fled the scene prior to po- lice arriving. Nadim said police received information that the suspect was using GO Transit to get out of the area. He said they contacted GO Transit and were able to determine what bus the individual was on. The suspect was then apprehended in Peel Region after members of the Halton Police Tactical Rescue Unit stormed the GO Transit bus. Police have said the victim and the sus- pect are known to each other, but provided no other details. Anyone with information about this in- cident is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825-4747 ext. 2278 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
