INTRODUCING OUR EVERYDAY ACCOUNTS new FirstOntario.com/ChequingAccounts The Oakville Fire De- partment is blaming a massive fire, which de- stroyed a commercial/ residential building in Oakville, on an electrical malfunction. The fire broke out around 9:04 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, at the corner of Trafalgar and Cornwall Roads. The property is occu- pied by Herat Carpets, a film company and also has a residential compo- nent. Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault said a woman driving in the ar- ea noticed flames erupt- ing from the three-storey building and called 911. The fire chief said when fire crews arrived sections of the structure were completely en- gulfed. "Flames were in the neighbourhood of 12 to 15 feet in height from the ground floor extending up," said Boissonneault. "Certainly, heavy smoke and fire conditions were seen through win- dows in the shop part." The fire chief said peo- ple had been inside the building when the fire started and had attempt- ed to grab a fire extin- guisher. He said they ultimate- ly realized the fire was too big and were able to safely evacuate. Fire crews fought the blaze for around two and a half hours before they were able to bring it un- der control. Boissonneault said this fire was particularly challenging because vari- ous renovations to the structure had created a number of void spaces be- hind the walls, which al- lowed the fire to spread quickly from one part of the building to the other. A total of 35 firefight- ers responded to this fire and succeeded in prevent- ing the flames from reaching a storefront ar- ea. No one was injured. Boissonneault said an investigation has deter- mined the fire started on the main floor and was the result of an electrical malfunction. "There were some wires on the ground level and there was found to be some arcing involved," he said. Damage to the build- ing is estimated at be- tween $800,000 and $1 mil- lion.
