Preliminary informa- tion collected by health of- ficials reveals that visits to the emergency room for mental health have in- creased among Halton resi- dents during the pandemic, particularly in those aged 18 and under. The number of Halton residents who identified emergency food as a need, when contacting the 211 Ontario helpline, also spiked shortly after the pandemic began in March. "Public health measures such as physical distancing requirements and the clo- sure of schools and non-es- sential services, while im- portant for controlling the spread of the virus, have al- so had unintended impacts on the health and well-be- ing of the population," said Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hamidah Megh- ani when discussing the is- sue recently with regional council. In light of this, Halton Public Health is working to collect data on how the pan- demic is affecting every- thing from substance use and opioids to child wel- fare, food insecurity and access to health care. A survey on the inciden- tal impacts of the pandemic was recently conducted among Halton residents, with the results still being processed. "The information will be used to identify areas that require public health at- tention, and residents who may need additional sup- ports," said Meghani, not- ing the data will also in- form other decision-mak- ing and the development of mitigation strategies. She highlighted the fact that people who are in a lower-income bracket are more likely to feel the inci- dental impacts of CO- VID-19. "We know income is the main social determinant of health, and for some people it has been quite an issue throughout this pandem- ic," she said. While the community's needs have increased in a variety of ways, Meghani said the ability for Halton Public Health to respond to them is "significantly de- creased" at the moment. She explained that many public health servic- es have been suspended as staff is reassigned to re- spond to local COVID-19 cases. "This makes it even more critical that the Hal- ton community come to- gether to control the spread of the virus so that public health can resume more regular services and, working with others, help mitigate the incidental im- pacts of COVID-19," she said.
