Earlier this year officers with the Halton police Human Trafficking Unit say they be- came aware of a man who they allege was recruiting young women and exploiting them into the sex trade. Police allege these offences occurred all across southern Ontario, however, the ma- jority are believed to have happened in Bur- lington and Oakville with a few taking place in Milton. Det. Dan Ciardullo of the Halton police Human Trafficking Unit said there are mul- tiple victims, all of whom are women who were recruited in Canada. On Thursday, Dec. 17, Halton police ar- rested a man in Toronto in connection with this investigation. Jermaine Neverson, 34, has been charged with: • four counts of trafficking in persons • four counts of procuring- exercising control • four counts of knowingly advertising sexual services • three counts of receiving material bene- fit from sexual services • three counts of receiving material bene- fit from trafficking in persons • two counts of withholding or destroying identity documents • eight counts of assault • three counts of forcible confinement • five counts of sexual assault • two counts of assault with a weapon • three counts of uttering threats • assault causing bodily harm • killing or injuring animals • two counts of mischief under $5,000 • procuring-providing sexual services for consideration. Neverson is being held in custody pend- ing a bail hearing. Ciardullo said the alleged victims are now in places of safety and are receiving support from the Halton police Victim Ser- vices Unit and the Sexual Assault & Vio- lence Intervention Services of Halton.
