Real Estate Advertorial Gingerbread house contest brings joy and aid to community Oakville real estate agent Wilma Fournier and her family team, Kirk, Guy and Holly Fournier has turned the tradition of decorat- ing a gingerbread house into a charitable event that will give a gift of $5,000 to local charities. Since COVID-19 has us celebrat- ing the holiday season differently, Fournier has found a new way to give back and keep the festive spirit alive with a community- wide gingerbread house competition. More than 250 gingerbread houses have been delivered to Oakville homes and four winners with the best-decorated house will win the chance to allot $1,250 to one of four local charities. The list of potential benefactors includes Kerr Street Food Bank, Halton Women's Place, Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre, Compassion Canada and Salvation Army's Lighthouse Shelter. There are also four Walmart gift cards to be won, and $1,500 in gift cards to be given to other winners. The competi- tion will be judged by Tina Gardin, Sutton Quantum's broker. "Everyone who participates knows some- one who will benefit from these organiza- tions," says Fournier. "We are also giving special award prizes, for those that strug- gle in some way," she explains. "Through this competition I have come to see de- spite some people's circumstances how hard they try and with joy in their hearts." Along with some of Fournier's clients, participants will include Oakville residents living in subsidized housing and supported by Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre (OPNC) - a community-based agency focusing on family support and poverty prevention. "Winners from this community can give back to the OPNC if they choose," Fournier says. "A lot of people - especially in times of financial struggles - don't have the means to donate this holiday season," Fournier ex- plains. "This is a way for them to give back. Four winners get to designate funds to the community. There's a huge feel-good ele- ment to the competition." Fournier says the competition is bringing families together. Without the help of the competition's sponsors, Loewen Mortgages, ACISS Home Inspections and real estate lawyer Larry Konrad, the event couldn't be possi- ble. Fournier says the response has been extremely positive and she's considering a similar event next year. Although the ginger- bread house build is a new tradition, she explains; "This could really go somewhere; I could get more partners and sponsors making this even bigger in the future."
