With the first doses of a CO- VID-19 vaccine on their way to the region, Halton Public Health offi- cials are making plans for eventu- al widespread immunizations of local residents. A COVID-19 vaccine task force is being established, headed up by Dr. Joanna Oda, the region's asso- ciate medical officer of health, and Tony Oliveri, acting commis- sioner of Halton's strategic trans- formation group. "The task force will plan, im- plement and monitor the delivery of immunization to Halton resi- dents," said Halton Medical Offi- cer of Health Dr. Hamidah Megh- ani. So far the vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech has been ap- proved by Health Canada, with a decision on the American-made Moderna vaccine expected soon as well. The Province announced on Dec. 18 that Halton Healthcare (HHC) is among 17 new hospital vaccine delivery sites that are set to receive the Pfizer vaccine. HHC, which operates the hos- pitals in Oakville, Milton and Georgetown, says plans are un- derway to establish a vaccination centre at Oakville Trafalgar Me- morial Hospital. The Province has indicated the doses are expected to start ar- riving the week of Dec. 21 and will be administered to health-care workers in high-risk settings first, such as long-term care homes and hospitals, followed by the other priority populations.
