Here are some quotes from O'Toole's 45-minute Q&A session. "Studies have shown that one in six businesses are fearing insolvency in the next year across this entire country, putting as many as two million jobs at risk. Small business is an engine that we need to make sure not just survives the crisis, but thrives after- wards." "We have been calling for a comprehensive re- view of the tax code for sev- eral years. Our challenge now is we're going to be fac- ing a $400-billion deficit and we want to still help people transition as we re- build from COVID. But if we don't get people working so that people can come off the support programs and we can get our fiscal house in order over the course of a decade .... If we don't get this under control, the Lib- eral government is putting health care at risk, they're putting Old Age Security at risk because the govern- ment cannot afford a gar- gantuan deficit." "Out of our G7 competi- tors, Canada spent the most per capita and we have the worst outcomes. We have the highest unemployment in the G7, business confi- dence is at disturbing lows and so the only growth we saw in the economy in the last quarter was the hot housing market and re- source economy." "We need to have a pri- vate sector that is invest- ing, creating jobs, that is confident of doing business in Canada again." "This (access to the U.S. market) is critical to the well-being of southern On- tario. It's also why I don't like the Trudeau carbon tax .... we are uncompeti- tive vis-a-vis our competi- tive border states -- Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michi- gan -- where there's no in- put price on carbon. I've al- ways said, any of these things, we do have to fall in line with the U.S. or we're going to hear a giant suck- ing sound of investment and jobs to the U.S. We have to be competitive on a tax and regulatory basis and the Buy American piece is something I think a smart approach to diplomacy can solve." "We have to take a prin- cipled position and if the ambassador or other mem- bers of the Communist Par- ty in Beijing are upset with me, it's because of my com- mitment to human rights and dignity and I think Ca- nadians should be OK to be on the right side of impor- tant issues." "I think there will be a rebalancing of global trade in the coming years; it's al- ready started. I think Cana- da needs to lead the effort so that we make sure that we are positioned to benefit from it. We have to work with the U.S. with respect to Chinese trade, conduct, particularly on steel and aluminum.... because we've suffered. I think there's an opportunity to see more free and fair trade amongst free countries and estab- lishing a norm approach that is aspirational, not a race to the bottom. I think consumer choice will drive this." CHAMBER HOSTS CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER Official Opposition Leader Erin O'Toole held virtual Q&A with Oakville Chamber members.
