Unionized workers employed by Reli- ance Home Comfort, including those at an office in Burlington, were locked out of their jobs on Thursday, May 13. The lockout occurred after the HVAC, plumbing and electrical provider and its employees represented by Unifor Local 1999 were unable to reach a new collective agreement. Unifor Local 1999 represents roughly 800 technicians, water heater installers, plumbers, electricians and administration staff at 13 Reliance locations across Onta- rio. Paul Gyarmati, Reliance Home Comfort vice-president for western Canada, said contract talks began in March and result- ed in a tentative agreement being reached by the bargaining committee. This agreement, he said, was not rati- fied by the membership. Gyarmati said the agreement was fair and included significant wage increases and benefit improvements. Unifor National Rep. Dan Valente said the major obstacle keeping the two sides from reaching a deal is insufficient com- pensation in the proposed agreement for Reliance's tier-two employees.
