Dr. Kieran Moore will replace Dr. David Wil- liams as Ontario's top doctor on June 26, taking the lead on the province's pandemic public health response and advising the government on all public health matters af- ter Williams retires on June 25. The province an- nounced the details on May 30. Moore's transi- tion into the role began on June 7, when he start- ed working alongside Williams. Here's what we know about the person who will be delivering Onta- rio's COVID-19 updates as of June 26. HE'S ALREADY A HOUSE- HOLD NAME IN PARTS OF THE PROVINCE Moore has served as chief medical officer of health for Kingston, Fron- tenac, Lennox and Add- ington Public Health- since 2017. During the pandemic, Moore became known in the region for YouTube videos in which he provided COVID-19 up- dates using markers and flip chart paper. Before he became the area's top doc- tor, he was Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington's associate medical officer of health going back to 2011. Moore also works at Queen's University, where he serves as the medical officer of health of the department of emergency and family medicine, the program di- rector of public health and preventive medicine and a professor of family and emergency medicine. HE'S A SCIENTIST Moore has experience researching surveillance systems for bioterrorism and outbreak detection, public health and pre-hos- pital care, among other projects. He has also conducte- d extensive research on the prevention, detection and surveillance of Lyme disease, which is trans- mitted by ticks, and advo- cated for a national Lyme disease surveillance net- work. In response, the fed- eral government created a national framework on Lyme disease. HE WAS AN EARLY ADOPTER OF COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH MEASURES Moore's public health unit was one of the first to- make masks mandatory- in retail settings and most public indoor spaces last June. The order took effect on June 27, 2020, fol- lowing similar bylaws in Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and Welling- ton-Dufferin-Guelph Pub- lic Health. In the early days of the pandemic last April, shortly after restaurants in the region closed, Moore also reassigned public health inspectors- normally tasked with conducting restaurant in- spections to instead visit long-term-care homes and ensure they were complying with COVID-19 precautions. HE HAS DRAWN PRAISE FROM OTHERS IN ONTARIO'S PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNITY Isaac Bogoch, an epide- miologist, infectious dis- eases doctor and member of the province's vaccine task force, wrote on Twit- ter of Moore, "He has skil- fully navigated Kingston through the pandemic (and) is a valuable mem- ber of the vaccine distri- bution task force." In a COVID-19 update- on its website on June 29, the Registered Nurses As- sociation of Ontario, led by CEO Doris Grinspun, lauded Moore's COVID-19 track record. "Dr. Moore has been a stellar performer during the entire pandemic and will no doubt do a terrific job in this new post," the update reads. Tyler Watt, an acute care registered nurse and the Ontario Liberal Par- ty's candidate for the Ot- tawa-area riding of Ne- pean, wrote in a Twitter post, "Dr. Kieran Moore has done a phenomenal job in Kingston during this pandemic."
