During the overnight hours between Monday, June 21 and Tuesday, June 22 at least five high-end ve- hicles were stolen. In one incident a white 2013 Maserati was taken from the driveway of a resi- dence on Lyndhurst Drive, police said. The suspect also report- edly entered the home, pos- sibly through an unlocked rear basement window, and stole cash. At 2:30 a.m. on June 22, a 2019 Lexus was stolen from the driveway of a home on nearby Bayshire Drive, po- lice said. The suspect was ob- served during that inci- dent, but could only be de- scribed as male. During the same period, police said a 2019 Lexus was also stolen from a driveway on Craigleith Road while another 2019 Lexus was taken from a driveway on North Ridge Trail. The thief or thieves then reportedly stole a 2018 Lex- us from a driveway on Creekwood Trail. Police said all these ve- hicles had their doors locked and they believe the suspect(s) may be using a signal relay device to de- feat the vehicle's security system by accessing the signal transmitted by the key fob and relaying it to a computer. The captured data is then used to program a blank key fob and start the vehicle. A similar surge in thefts occurred in Oakville in March at which time police warned residents that thieves were going after 2017 to 2020 Lexus vehicles including models RX350 and GX460, Toyota models, Land Rover Range Rover models and Ford pickup trucks. These vehicles are re- portedly in high demand and are often shipped over- seas. Several men from Que- bec were ultimately arrest- ed in connection with those March thefts. Police continue to en- courage residents to: • Park your vehicle within a locked/secure ga- rage as the majority of the vehicles are stolen from residential driveways. • If a garage is not acces- sible, park another vehicle behind it in the driveway to act as a physical barrier to its removal. • Lock the data port us- ing a simple device that can be purchased online and blocks access to the computer port where thieves gain access to re- program the vehicle's keys. • Invest in an aftermar- ket GPS (global positioning system) tracker or have one installed by the dealer, as it may assist in recovery of the vehicle if it is stolen. • Ensure your unattend- ed vehicle(s) are locked and secure. • Never leave spare keys in your vehicle. • Never leave spare keys outside of your residence. • When not in use, place vehicle keys inside a radio frequency shielding bag/ pouch to block cell signals. • Equip your vehicle with an alarm. • Use other devices to de- ter thefts (e.g. a steering wheel locking device). • Consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system and ensure your cameras are properly placed and functioning for 24-hour use. Anyone with informa- tion about these latest thefts is asked to contact Halton police at 905-825- 4747 ext. 2216 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
