Examples of fiduciary relationships include an agent and principal, trustee/power of attorney and beneficiary, and director and company. Fiduciary duties - a duty of loyalty, a duty of good faith and the requirement to put the other party first - are held to the highest standards of care at common law. If a fiduciary fails to perform its duties, it may result in damages to the vulnerable party. As a fiduciary, a director of a corporation is held to high standards, given the great deal of trust and confidence required from them. Directors are elected to act fairly and in good faith, with the expectation that they will act in the best interests of the corporation. As well, directors owe the company, not its shareholders, duties of disclosure, honesty, loyalty, candour, and the duty to favour the company's interest over his or her own. The courts will consider the 'business judgment rule', in determining whether a director has met its fiduciary duties, meaning that the court will defer to the director's decisions as long as the director has brought an appropriate degree of prudence and diligence in reaching a reasonable business decision. The summer campaign will see canvass- ers visiting homes between now and Aug. 31. Organizers say the Foundation is partner- ing with Globalfaces Direct for this endea- vour. They also noted staff have completed rig- orous safety training, are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and are using contactless payment methods to mini- mize any potential risk of illness. Cash donations will not be accepted at the door. Organizers said the canvassing team will adhere to the physical distancing and pre- vention practices outlined in Ontario's Pub- lic Health and Safety protocols. This includes frequent handwashing and regular use of alcohol-based sanitizers, reg- ularly sanitizing materials and tablets, lim- iting physical exposure and staying home when ill. The canvassers will have an OTMH lan- yard with a photo ID that will be clearly vis- ible. They will also be wearing vests with the Oakville Hospital Foundation logo. Canvassers will be in neighbourhoods Monday through Saturday, excluding major holidays, asking potential donors to consider making a contribution to the hospital. "The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the important role that all health- care workers play in caring for our commu- nity," Foundation CEO Mary McPherson said. "The monthly giving program provides a simple and convenient way for individuals to support OTMH and thank our hospital for protecting the health of our loved ones in their care."
