Robert Wyles, 80 -- described as an experi- enced boat from Durham Region -- was discovered by a boater in the vicinity of Bronte Harbour Tues- day morning (Aug. 31). Wyles' unoccupied ves- sel was discovered last Thursday evening while Halton Regional Police Ser- vice's Marine Unit was as- sisting another boater dur- ing the storm. After boarding the boat and finding it unoccupied, officers joined with numer- ous rescue agencies from neighbouring Hamilton and Mississauga in an ex- tensive search that was fi- nally curtailed after rough- ly 40 hours. At that point it became a missing person's case. The boat discovered by police had been purchased earlier in the day. Wyles was seen leaving Bronte Harbour alone in the boat. The six-day search in- volved multiple police ma- rine units from several mu- nicipalities with coasts along Lake Ontario. Units like Peel Regional and Po- lice Hamilton Police as well as the military's Joint Res- cue Coordination Centre from Canadian Forces Base Trenton. "HRPS would like to ex- tend our sincerest condo- lences to the family and friends of Mr. Wyles and thank the public for their assistance in the search," read an HRPS press re- lease.
