"I don't know if it's a pattern yet," Jen- ner said, seemingly not wanting to ac- knowledge her key role in Canada's gold- medal triumphs. At least one of her teammates has no such trouble. "She was always a role model," said Oakville's Kristin O'Neill. "All the Hockey Canada players that went through Cor- nell, that was the reason I wanted to go there. I've been following in her foot- steps." And now, like Jenner, she can call her- self a world champion. O'Neill might not have had to wait nine years, but she had her own heartbreaking history with the U.S. Twice as a member of Canada's Un- der-18 team, she endured a pair of over- time losses to the Americans in the gold- medal game. "It would have been hard to imagine that happening again," the 23-year-old said. "There was more on the line and a much larger stage, but it was so much bet- ter seeing smiles at the end." O'Neill had also done her share of wait- ing. After making her national team de- but at the Four Nations Cup in 2018, CO- VID-19 wiped out most of the women's in- ternational tournaments for two years. O'Neill said the wait only made it more memorable. "This year was so special. After getting cancelled twice, solely practising for the last year and a half, it was a lot to man- age," she said. "To finally be able to play, and win, it just feels that much sweeter." Maybe the only thing that could top that would be a repeat in five months time in Beijing. The team will train in Calgary, in the same rink where it won world gold, as it prepares for the Olympics. "It's pretty exciting. We never have two big tournaments in one season," said Jen- ner, who finished second at worlds with 11 points in six games. "I think it will help to have those memories in our home rink where we'll be practising every day before the Olympics."
