The revelation was re- leased in a notification to families Friday (Oct. 1) ti- tled "Irresponsible Social Media Challenge" as the board asked for support in "reinforcing some im- portant messages with your children about using technology responsibly and adhering to the HDSB Code of Conduct." It had come to the board's attention that a challenge called "Slap a Teacher" is trending on the social media platform TikTok, the board said. While this has not oc- curred at any HDSB schools to date, a previous challenge on the platform in September involved students recording them- selves vandalizing school washrooms, which did oc- cur at some HDSB schools, the board added. The board is encourag- ing families to visit the HDSB's Technology & You webpage, which pro- vides information and re- sources for students and families on how to use technology responsibly.
