A record 102 women were elected to the 338- member House of Com- mons in the 2021 election. While this is an historic achievement, we still have a long way to go. October is Women's History Month. This month we cele- brate the vast achieve- ments of Canadian wom- en who have paved the way for where we are to- day, and those who con- tinue to push boundaries and reach new heights in all aspects of Canadian society to continue to build a foundation for fu- ture generations of young women to succeed. In honour of Women's History Month, I would like to invite you to read "Behind the Red Door," a book by local Oakville au- thor Louise Johnson de- tailing the remarkable history and influence of female Canadian entre- preneur Elizabeth Arden, who was a pioneer of the global beauty industry. At a time when women didn't have the right to vote, Arden became one of the wealthiest self-made women in the world and the first businesswoman to grace the cover of Time magazine. Johnson, a successful intern turned marketing professional, highlights how much has changed a century later and how much remains the same. This book is a powerful exploration of the re- markable determination of a Canadian business- woman who shattered ev- ery glass ceiling and opened doors for new gen- erations of women entre- preneurs. I encourage everyone to read the book and join me for a virtual Meet the Author event with John- son at the end of October. One of you will win a signed copy of the book. Follow my social media or sign up to receive my weekly update for details on the upcoming event. Pam Damoff is the member of Parliament for Oakville North-Burling- ton. HISTORIC ELECTION FOR WOMEN OPINION RECORD NUMBER OF WOMEN ELECTED TO HOUSE OF COMMONS, WRITES PAM DAMOFF PAM DAMOFF Column "While this is an historic achievement, we still have a long way to go." As a long-time driver and cyclist, I am very pleased to see quite a number of very prudent cyclists these days, with flashing red rear lights and flashing white lights in front, even during daylight hours. These make them very visible at a distance and al- lows the motorist plenty of time to plan, leaving ample space for them well in ad- vance. Even during the day, with sunshine and tree shadows, it can be difficult to see cyclists from afar -- especially if they are dressed in dark colours, as they often are. Using such flashing lights all the time and wear- ing brightly coloured tops would greatly enhance safe- ty, and most likely save lives. As well, far too many times I come upon cyclists riding in the dark of night without any lights and dressed completely in black. This is inviting tragedy.
