I was grateful to stand alongside family and friends in Ottawa and to have friends from Oakville and across the country join me virtually. In addition to re- presenting our communi- ty, it is my sincere honour to have been appointed as Canada's minister of na- tional defence. Over the last several weeks, I have had the op- portunity to meet with the Canadian Armed Forces and national defence lead- ers, defence experts, and international partners. The members of the Ca- nadian Armed Forces ded- icate their lives to safe- guarding our country, and it is my top priority to en- sure that our people in uni- form operate in a safe and healthy environment. Misconduct in the mili- tary is not just a woman's issue. Since being appoint- ed, I have reviewed, and ac- cepted in full, Madame Ar- bour's recommendations to move the investigation and prosecution of sexual misconduct cases to the ci- vilian system. To commemorate Re- membrance Day and Veter- ans' Week, I had the plea- sure of joining the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 486 for its Remembrance Week service here in Oak- ville. It was so special to converse with local veter- ans, our Oakville chapter of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and members of the Halton Regional Police Ser- vice. I also had the opportuni- ty to attend the National Remembrance Day Cere- mony for my first time as the minister of national de- fence. Oakville residents have expressed a number of pri- orities that they would like our government to ad- dress. These include con- tinued support for families and hardest-hit business- es, furthering Truth and Reconciliation initiatives with Indigenous communi- ties and taking concrete steps to fight climate change. I am looking for- ward to working on these key priorities for our Oak- ville community and all Canadians. As always, if you require any assistance of a federal nature, please do not hesi- tate to reach out to my con- stituency office at ani- ta.anand@parl.gc.ca or 905-338-2008. OPINION HONOURED TO SERVE OUR TOWN, AND CANADA ENSURING MILITARY OPERATES IN SAFE AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT MY TOP CONCERN, WRITES ANITA ANAND ANITA ANAND Column LETER TO THE EDITOR In response to Joyce Wayne's column, MPP Ste- phen Crawford (Nov. 11) de- fends the provincial gov- ernment's actions on long- term care. He cites the new levels of inspection and fines with- out mentioning that his own party scrapped most inspections after they took office. It was a good way to not increase the backlog, he mentions. Adding increased staff- ing is a positive, but putting it into a system that is poor- ly-thought-out in the first place does not fix the prob- lem of poor, or inappropri- ate, care. Studies show that se- niors do not want to go into long-term care. Studies al- so show that home care is cost-effective, and can help many people remain at home and reduce the need for institutional care. There are many innova- tive models of long-term care that can lead to better quality of life and outcomes for seniors who truly need to be cared for in a residential setting. There is also the old model of small groups of people living with support, even full time care, within their own communities. This government seems fixated on more of the same, rather than explor- ing alternatives that could improve people's lives.
