"We all push each other. There's no judgement. You go at your own pace but we are there to chal- lenge you," says owner and coach Anna D'lorio. The multi award-winning body builder took over ownership of Primal Athletics a year ago. She had been a member for eight years at the North Ser- vice Road facility that opened in 2011. Her personal journey and that of countless other clients is reflected in the gym's motto "We get results. Period". The results come from the ex- pert guidance of a coach/personal trainer as well as nutrition coaching and of course participa- tion in boot camps that run several times a day, six days a week. The gym's certified coaches are university graduates with backgrounds in kine- siology, biomechanics, sports performance and rehab, who take pride in teaching how to lift and exercise safely and make healthy food choices, all in a fun and safe environment. Their boot camps are geared to functional strength training. Each day has a different focus, from upper body, lower body, butt and abs, to cardio and full body metabolic conditioning that combines cardio and weights. Personal training is designed for the individual. The coach creates a customized program with ev- ery session building on the last. "These sessions help you perform better in boot camp, sports and in general daily living. You learn how to engage your muscles and activate them. The coaches are able to assess you, see if you have any issues and ensure you are not going to injure yourself. They are there to help," explains D'lorio. Primal Athletics also offers power lifting ses- sions three nights a week. Our members chal- lenge themselves and our coaches show them how to lift safely. It's a great time to meet people and have some fun. D'lorio describes the sense of community at her gym that offers a more intimate environment than "big box" operations. With clients coming into the gym again for in-person sessions the tra- ditional comradery has been elevated, although virtual sessions did keep them connected. Primal Athletics serves sports teams looking for professional services as well as people who want a healthy lifestyle and a positive outlook. That includes couples who share personal train- ing sessions and busy people who prioritize time for their health. Also women going through menopause understand the important role exer- cise and a proper diet play in diminishing symp- toms like hot flashes. D'lorio has experienced the positive effects physical fitness can have on symptoms of Parkinson's, a disease she was di- agnosed with in 2017. She was determined to not let her diagnosis stop her from living a full a life and the boot camp sessions D'Iorio leads in the morning, prove just that. That word, "determination", is tattooed on her wrist. It reminds her not to give up and that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. That mindset is an inspiration to clients.
