The officers consist of Freeman Bray, chief; Jack Osborne, deputy chief; Dick Scarrow, acting cap- tain (pending the recovery of Al Bray), and Sherman Gilliam, lieutenant. Two Great Scourges When two to three million dol- lars' damage was done and 44 lives lost through fires in Eastern Canada recently, the average Ganadian became very conscious of fire hazards. In the same way, a growing menace, which is in 'some respects even greater than fire, cane be reduced by bringing the facts to public attention, Traffic acci- dents cause many more human tragedies than do fires, Complete government figures are not avail- able yet for 1947, but it is known that fires in Ontario last year killed 117 people while traffic accidents killed at least 720. These sirens are rung by the Bell Telephone operator. With water usually in ve scant supply, the fighting of fires in the country is a sizable task. However, our lads are a hard working bunch and not easily dis- couraged, They turn out in the middle of the night, fair weather or foul, and do their best. Should voluntary conservation of electric power not be suffici- ent and power have to be cut off the town water will cease, the fire alarm won't ring, and the telephone operator will have to ring all cally by turning a crank and all but two gas pumps will be out of operation, Also the fac- tory and boatworks operations will lose machine production. But it should be remembered that the traffic safety problem is grow- ing bigger all the time. Our motor vehicle traffic has in- creased faster than ways and means could be found to reduce accidents, and is still increasing. During the past year the pub- lic seems to have become more aware of the traffic accident menace, Traffic accidents did no go up in proportion to the number of licensed vehicles, the 'We wish to express our sincere | tion hose, which limits the truck ; } £ thanks to the Oakville and Bronte to being within 55 feet of the Eh Of Ae hy Tire Department and all the kind | Water supply. Since then, it ap- pears that the public has gradu- ally forgotten one of the most constructive features of this leg- islation aimed at reducing acci- dents. That is the provision for removing more of our careless drivers from the highways. Loss of driving license and owner's permit is a possible outcome of any acident caused by failure to observe the rules of the road.
