Then they both told it to Hop-a-Long the Grasshopper, and he thought it was a wonder- ful idea, too. Then Blackie and Glive and Hop-a-Long told it to field mouse, to a family of hornets, and to a cricket. And they all agreed it was wonderful, and why had none of them thought of it before? So finally all of them went in a group to speak to Knarf and Hanid, the Shadows, who might be able to tell them exactly how to go about it. They found Knarf and Hanid sitting on the back steps of the house. All the others stood behind Blackie while Blackie explained his wonderful idea. "The weather js getting good and cold. We'd all like a warm place to stay in. We won't make any noise. We won't do any harm. We won't bother anyone. The people who live in the house won't even know we're there--" "There?" said Knarf, inter- rupting Blackie. "Where?" "I was just coming to that PAINTING & DECORATING Prompt Service THOMAS H. And Blackie scurried off to hide behind all the others. Hop-a-Long started to say: "We just want fo move into the --into the--" Then he hopped off because he couldn't say the rest of it. Finally Hanid said: "Please won't one of you tell us what you want?" But none of them could, and after a good deal of hiding be- hind one another, they all be- gan going away. "The people who live in the house probably would not let us do it anyway," the field mouse squeaked as he turned to 5 "We're sure they wouldn't," said the family of hornets. "Just the same it's a wonder- ful idea," sighed the Cricket. Knarf and Hanid caught Glive the Snail, who couldnt get away as fast as the others. Hanid stood in front of him, and Knarf stood behind, holding on to his shell to keep him from moving. "Now," said Hanid severely, shaking her finger in front of Glive's face; "you better tell us!" "Well," said Glive, "I suppose I'll have to. But I don't like to be the only one." "Where "do you want to stay Introducing . . . BY HERBERT MERRY Last spring, when we finished the story of Patsy, I promised to tell more stories about Patsy and her family. I must keep my promise, so more stories will fol- low. The next book in the series is called "Patsy's Kid Fudgee It will tell about Patsy's second lit- ter of puppies and her favourite kid, Fudgee. That is, she always says she is the favourite kid. I am not sure of this, but maybe you will be able to tell for your- self as you read the stories. Those of you who did not read the first book will need an in- troduction to Patsy. She is an American Cocker Spaniel. She used to be red in colour but now age has turned her lovely red coat to silver-grey. Some say she is almost a platinum blonde. She has the longest ears of any of our spaniels and undoubtedly the best nature. At times she gets kittenish and frisks about like a pup and you'd never guess that she has passed her ten year mark. In fact she's nearer to twelve. You know a dog ages as much in a year as a human does in seven, so Patsy is therefore over 80 and quite a gay old grandma. She is the head of the house and has two of her children and two grandchildren living with her. Her children are Pokee, -the wild little daughter from her first litter and Fudgee, her favourite Knarf and Hanid, "There--I knew you wouldn't like it." And Glive tried to -move away again, "But we don't mind at Hanid cried, laughing. "No one will mind," said Knarf, "especially if you all promise not to disturb anyone or destroy any- thing." "Oh no, we won't, no one will even know we're there. We'll just find some little dark corner and go to sleep. Hey fellers! Every- body come here!" Glive shouted in excitement. "We can move in- to the cellar! We can! It's a won- derful idea!" And without anoth- er word, the whole crowd made their way through a crack in the cellar door and disappeared. any Quality Venetian Blinds Custom Made Guaranteed Two Years REPAIR and LAUNDRY SERVICE & Mfg. Co. Patsy's Kid Fudgee kid from her second litter." The two grandchildren are Mickee, her fine upstanding black grand- son, and little Tuffee, the young- est of our dog family. Patsy has great grandchildren and grea, great, granchlidren living not far from her. She does not know them personally, but nevertheless they are her kin and should treat her with great res- pect if they ever meet. Maybe they never will. Lil White Cookee, whom every- one loved so much, was a great grandson of Patsy. It was due to Cookee and his enormous popu- larity that this story started. Everyone wanted to Know more about Lil White = Cookee, so I started to 'tell his story. I started way back with his great grand- mother, the head of the clan. I expected to gradually get the story told until the time when Cookee entered, but alas! The little fellow died, long before he came into the story. A great many of the little folks who read this story know. the dogs in it personally. Fudgee, Pokee and the Black Boy Mickee, have all been to the schools on Humane Society Work: Little Tuffee once went to all the schools in a large cardboard box with her little brothers and sis- ters. They showed the pupils how six weeks old puppies enjoy Dr. Ballards Puppy Kibble. Patsy too has made many public appearan- ces. Not as many lately as she is showing her age more now. If you want to know her bet- ter, call on her sometime. She's home most of the time now, since she gave up her social calling and canine welfare work. Why, here she comes now. I'll call her sq you can meet her. "Patsy, old girl, come over here and meet some boys and girls!" Tre "Why should I, for goodness id sakes?
