The colored pictures in magazines, the variety and beauty of floor coverings and fabrics, in the shops, their tasteful window dis- plays, should all combine to in- still in us a desire for a colorful home whose most important fea- ture is the background. Citron and a pale gold tone are popular wall hues with leading decorators. These colors are specially useful on walls of rooms that need brightening up, and are correct with either contemporary Or per- fod styles of furniture. Copper is a color that is coming to the top of the list of smart wall tones. Such a distinctive col- or needs carefully selected hues in the room's furnishings,to bring out its delicate character. French gray retains its popularity as background material, and some of the lavender tones are now in vogue. Deep green is the most popular deep color and can. create a striking room. If you are using a dark tone on the wall, it is ad- visable to use a sealer coat un- derneath, as this helps to obtain a uniform color. Many of these attractive "shades are available already mixed for you in the can. Some can be mix- ed very quickly and simply to match your sample. A painting and decorating contractor, of course, can match your sample colors with ease. Or it's not too difficult for you to do yourself. One way is to start with a color that approximates the one you want and add the correct hue to produce the re- quired result. Or you can start with white, light ivory or pale gray. Very important it is to be sure that you mix sufficient to cover the entire surface to be painted. The colors in oil you will use to obtain the hue of your choice come in tubes or small cans, if you're planning to tint an oil base paint or enamel. If you're altering the color of a lacquer, a casein (water) paint, or an emulsion (oil and water) AFALGAR JOURNAL SUNLEY-- COLOR CAPERS red to green, for Instance, or orange to blue, violet to yellow. Or gray can be used, or a very small quantity of lampdlack. These latter methods do not pro- duce as delicate a graying. A common trick when painting ceilings is to add a little of the wall tint to the ceiling color in the interest of color harmony. Another trick that decorators employ is to tint the paint to be used on the window wall lighter than that for the non-window walls. Window walls, getting no reflected light look darker than the other walls if this is not done. Paint dries a different color than it appears to be in the can. For this reason, it's very wise to brush out a large sample of your finished mixture and allow it to dry. Study it carefully under both daylight and artificial light. Re- member too that the color you choose looks lighter in the paint chip than it will on the finished wall. Also, four walls of the same color reflect each other and deep- en the color effect. Below are a few formulae for achieving current popular colors: Yellow-Green (Chartreuse): medium chrome yellow and some medium chrome green, added to white. Plum (dusky Indian red, white. GreenBlue (turquoise): add cobalt blue, pale chrome green to white. Brown: add chrome yellow and burnt umber to white; to make it reddish, add Venetian red; to make it cinammon, add raw sien- na and a touch of golden ochre. red-purple): add ultramarine blue to CHILDREN'S AID RATIFIES TWO ADOPTIONS IN DEC. After mixing these two thoroughly, add them to the paint in the container, stir- ring thoroughly.
