But you couldn't say, Hanid said to herself at that moment, that Purr Purr had good floor man- ners! On the Floor "Floor manners? It doesn't sound right at all," Hanid remark- ed to herself. "But that's what it must be. She is eating on the floor!" Hanid sat down on the porch steps to think about this. "Now there's the Bumble Bee. She eats her dinner in a flower. So I suppose she must have good flower manners. Just imagine a mother bee saying to her little PERFECT oor Manners THEY WERE Purr Purr had good Toor manners "And here's the Fly. He has Ceiling Manners, because I often see him eating on the ceiling. The Horse and the Cow have Meadow Manners or Stable Manners. But what kind of manners has the Frog got? He just sits on a rock and catches flies." Like the Birds After thinking about the Frog for a minute or two, Hanid de cided that he had Air Manners, sort of like the birds. The was be- cause the Frog caught and ate the flies right in the air without both: bee: "Now remember, dear, eat your honey slowly and be sure not to spill any on the buttercups and clover blossoms. They've all been been freshly cleaned by the rain last night." "And then there's Blinky Mole} continued Hanid, talking to her- self. "He has underground table manners, or just underground man- ners, like the worms and the beet- les. And what about the Sunfish and the Minnows? They must have water manners. Or perhaps," Han- id added quickly, "they're called Pond manners] or lake manners, or Brook Manners. It's all very, very strange." Hanid rose and peeked in through the kitchen door. Purr Purr was still lapping up the milk. Hanid smiled and sat down on the steps again. "Now the birds," Hanid went on to herself, "have several dif- ferent kinds of manners. Some of them have Air Manners, and some of them have Tree Manners, and some of them have Ground Man- ners; and some of them have Cage Manners. The animals in the Zoo have cage manners, too. She thought about the Duck and the Goose and the Swan. They all stuck their heads in the water of a pond and ate things off the mud at the bottom. "Muddy Manners --that's what they've got!" said Hanid. By this time Purr Purr was finshed with her milk and was meowing to come outside. Hanid opened the door for her. "And now, dear," Hanid said, taking Her in her lap, "I guess youll wander around in the cellar, hunting for mice. I do hope, if you catch any, that youll eat them with . . . with--nice mice man- ners," Hanid said at last. But she wasn't sure that was right either. It certainly didn't sound COUNTY COMMENTARY (Continued from Page 13) few can equal that of A. T. Brown, «ho resigned as secretary-treas- urer of the Acton auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. last week after having served 53 years in that capacity. Knox: Hey Kids| Next Week This is the third book in the series about Patsy and her fam- 1t is called Popo Returns, and is the story of the coming back of little Pokee to Crammond House and her family. Those of you who read the two preceding books will remember little Polkee. She was Patsy's , flibbertigibbet little red daughter from her first litter, She was a rather wild little character who did and said silly, {hings, but she won your heart right away, and you -loved her immediately. Those of you who have not read any of these articles before need an introduction to Patsy. She is an American cocker spaniel. Once she was red in color, but now age hes turned her lovely red coat to silver-grey. In fact you might dll her a platinum blonde. She hac the longest ears of any of our spanidls, and undoubtedly the best nature. At times she gets quite Kittenish and frisks about like a pup. When it snows she loves it dearly, and burrows her nose down under the snow and gets little flakes on her grey- ish coat, looking like a tinselled ornament on a Christmas' tree. Of course we all get older as time goes on, and so does Patsy. She's liad another birthday since the last book, and now she's approach- ing thirteen. I've told you before that a dog ages as much in a year as a human does in seven, so Patsy is therefore about 90, and quite a gay old grandma. Recently. old- age Has started to show. She has rheumatism in her hind legs, anc can't get about like she used to. She says "I'm still OK, but just getting near to 'the end of my path." Patsy is the head of, the house and has two of her children and two grandchildren living with her. Pokee and Fudgee are her two daughters. The grandchild- ren are Mickee, her fine upstand- ing black grandson, and little Tuf- fee, the youngest of our dog fam- ily. Ll White Cookee, whom everyone . loved so much, was a great grandson of Patsy. It was due to Cookee and his enormous popularity that this story start ed. Everyone wanted to know mere about him, so I started to tell his story, but alas, the little fellow died before he came into the story. A great many of our young readers know the dogs in The Cookee Column Comes Back With Book Three, Entitled "Popo Returns" | these stories personally, ugg, Pokee and Tuffee, and Mise also known as "Mr. Mickloborg} or just "Mickle", have visited yy, schools on Humane Society yoy Patsy, too, has made many py lic, appearances. No lately, as g, says she has retired from pu life, "Oh cuttlefish and gg warms," she says, "let the yoy, ones do it. I must have my rey as I'm on the downward strotey! It you want to meet her pg sonally Ill call her Shey curled Up by the stove, hut | think she'll say a word to yoy Patsy old girl--Patsy, PAG) I have to yell at her now, who is deaf and not she. "Paty; come over here and meet son] of your new friends." "Ol, crab-apples In vinegar | can't be bothered. I don't want new friends--haven't got time tape--red tape, red tape! "Oh Pats, cheer up. you were feeling well today." "I ain't; I ain't well at all, ay besides, I'm sleepy. I want to gf on with my nice long sleep] where no-one can bother me, | Bowls of gravy." Patsy really isn't as bad as st sounds. You'll find out as yg read! the chapters to follow if Popo Returns. HEALTH EXPENDITURES Based on a per capita rate of $1.20, a budget of $48,696 for the operation of Halton county health unit in 1951 was presented to county council last week by Dr. James Mather, M.O.H. and direc- tor of the unit. With a govern- ment grant covering half of this amount, Halton's share will thus bo $24,348. With the county's equalized assessment being es- tablished at $33,470,384, Dr. Math- er figured'the mill rate for oper- ating the unit at .72 mills, which he felt was very small as com- pared to other health units in the province.
