Page 7 SPRING SPARKS NEW SNIPE HUNT AMONG LOCAL SAILORS BY BETTINA MASSON Those jittery characters with glinting eyes one sees haunting the pler on sunny days are pro- bably members of Oakville Yacht squadron. As they wander along the jutting concrete, eagerly eye- ing cold Lake Ontario, their lips silently moying, they are counting the days and hours until they can sail their trim snipes or miniature prams again. In fact, any day now you may expect to see one of them striding purposefully down to the boat yard, scraper, paint and brush in hand, all set to give a beloved boat a new spring coat. Only last Monday evening, with the temperature hovering around 30 degrees, the squadron met in St. Jude's hall to discuss adding new snipes and new members to the fleet. As a result, three more international design snipes have been ordered from the Sail-Craft Co. They'll be built of pine with mahogany trim and hollow sitpa masts, and will be delivered about May 24. Sails are coming from Ratsey and Lapthorne, well known Cowes, England, sail- malk- ers. Last year, snipes were ordered from Nova Scotia by individual members. This year, two of the new ones are jointly owned by a syndicate headed by Larry Cond and. Alex MacKay. The third is being purchased outright by A. C. Penn, a new member whose years of small boat sailing experience will make him a decided asset to the squadron. The ten snipes of last year's fleet, plus the new trio and the revamped snipe of Art Hills, will| 9-2 bring the O.Y.S. snipe fleet to fourteen boats. Thus the season of 1951 promises more racing ex- citement with these craft, which handle well on Ontario's cold and rough waters, There are still eighteen prams in the club, many owned by jun- iors, which will continue their own competitions. One or two, owned by sailors who have ac- quired the bigger snipes, are for sale this spring, and the squadron is naturally anxious to keep them in Oakville. Anyone interested should phone Commodore Bill MacRae for information. And any- one interested in keen sailing still has ten days in which to place an order for a snipe with the club. COUNCIL MEETS MONDAY Postponed through illness on March 5, for the first time since Oakville became a town, council will meet next on Monday evening, March 19. Bronte downed Blues 3-1 to remain one point back of the leaders, while Blues and Reds were deadlocked in third place. Greens trimmed Appleby 9-1 in the other bantam Bronte jumped to the peewee group with a 21 victory over Canadiens, while Appleby battled to a 1-1 draw with Chicago to share second place with Canadiens. It was a different story in the sec- ond half of the doubleheader, however, as Trafalgar Motors blew hot all the way to roll up an 115 win over Bronte Mer- chants, The commercial lads are dishing out a very entertaining brand of hockey, and are well worth a look each Thursday night.
