The very names are fascinating -- yellow ochre, burnt umber, raw sienna, chrome green, Prussian blue, Lapis lazuli, lampblack, etc. Many of these pigments have to be imported. For instance, the best umber comes from Cyprus, although England, France, and Wales produce umber. Ochre is found in several parts of Europe, sienna in Italy, and various types of oxides are imported from Spain, Whiting comes from the white cliffs of Dover! Red pigments have a strange background. It apears that it was around 1550 that the Aztecs started to grind cochineal bugs for a red dye that is called "scar- let". This same name was also applied to the dye made from the kermes insect found on oak trees of Asia and Europe, and was men- tioned in Hebrew scriptures as "tola" and the Romans and Greeks called it "coccus". This pigment, therefore, would appear to be oldest one on record. The most important yellow pig- ment is yellow ochre, which is a strong clear color obtained" from clay that is found in both France and America! The word is deriv- ed from the Greek word "ochros" which implies a yellowish | fone Chrome is another familiar word, and the chrome pigments vary from light yellow to orange. Cad- chrome greens are produced by processing chrome yellows with Prussian blue. Paint as a covering for build- ings, dates back to remote an- tiquity. Not only did Chinese and Egyptians posses a remark- able knowledge of color hpplica- tion, but Mayan villages also re- veal equal ability. It is known that, as early as 3000 BC. "Egyptian Blue" was compounded from inorganic substances and was still in popular use when Tutankhamen ruled. Oakville-Trafalgar Journal, 7 Dunn St, North, Oakville, Ontario. Sienna, named for a town near Rome, is a clay stained with compounds of iron. Burnt sienna is made by roasting raw sienna earth.
