Thursday, April 26, 1951 THE OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR JOURNAL Page 18 VERYBODY READS CLASSIFIEDS ON PAGE EIGHT o just had to call you and tell you the good news." Its a big event for us too--and it is taking place in homes and offices, in cities and villages every day-- bringing more and better telephone service to more and more people. In the past five years we've connected over one and a half million telephones to meet new requests for service. We've added well over two million miles of wire to carry the ever growing volume of local and Long Distance calls. Tn fact we've packed as much growth into the past five years as we did in the first fifty years of our history. We're going right on with the job. If you haven't service, we want you to know we're working at it. Your place on the list is being protected and your telephone will be installed just as soon as possible. FROM YOUR COLOR COUNSELOR --RUTH D. SUNLEY-- EXPECTING GUESTS? As you live in Oakville, you can be sure that you will have many guests, especially during the pleasant months ahead. Some of the guests you will Invite back enthusiastically, while others . . . well. Perhaps it has not occurred to you that some of them wouldn't want to come back anyway. Not that your table wasn't ,» loaded with good foodstuffs despite cur rent prices, not that your garden wasn't at its loveliest, but the accommodation may have been far from inviting. Too often the guest's room is the one that re- ceives the old furnishings not needed in the rest of the house, and the mattress leaves much to be desired Small details are important, as you will know if you've been a guest yourself. Are there plenty of hangers in the closet, and have you emptied a couple of drawers for the guests use? A small campstool makes an ideal lug- gage rack. It's easy too to pro- vide ash-trays, a box of cleansing tissues, and a lamp that's handy to the bed in case 'the guest in question likes to read before go- ing to sleep. . If you're really going to provide the extras--don't forget how handy. you yourself have often found a needle and thread when you've been travelling. A few powder puffs, a clothes brush, and a clock are other thoughtful details. A small stand or rack in the room where the guest is able to hang a towel is a practical "must". Redecorating the guest room before the summer influx begins |S would not seem to be too dificult, as present-day paints dry quickly, are easily applied, and the color selection Is practically limitless. This room should be fun to re- decorate as it provides an oppor- tunity for eye-catching effects which are calculated, to be highly pleasing to a casual guest. While extremes in color styling might be tiring in a room that is used all the time, these same effects may be very stimulating to a person who will be occupying the room for # comparatively short time. One very successful guest room on the east side of the house has ceiling, walls and woodwork in lemon yellow. The floor is cover- ed wall to 'wall with lime green broadloom, and the drapes are lemon yellow. The furniture is grayed elm and the accent color is cocoa brown. The lamps are rass. Another attractive guest room has parchment colored ceiling, walls and woodwork. One large hooked rug of many colors and much pattern is on the floor, and the curtains are jade green. The bedside furniture is painted the same green as the drapes, and the chairs are painted rich red. The lamps are black and white. Even more! unusual is the visit or's quarters that has three dusty rose walls and the fourth wall behind the bed is in a very in- tense shade of the same hue. The céiling is white, as are the frilly curtains at the 'window. The secondary color is turquoise which is carried out in the bedspread, cotton floor covering, and paint- ed furniture. White lamps com- plete the picture. If your guest room leads a double life, and seconds as a sewing room, study, or play-room, then your color scheme will neces- sarily be more conservative and will depend on location, lighting, and usage. Give the guest room thereal test --sleep in it for a night. UPS AND DOWNS The higher one gets in the eve- ning, the lower he feels in the morning. GET THE HABIT OF SEND! SEA RANGER NEWS Members of Oakville Sea Ranger Crew were guests of SRS Princess. Royal at the 'Haida' Sea Cadet shore establisment on Saturday tvening, April 1th, and by all accounts had a wonderful time. S.R.S. Princess Royal had invited Sea Rangers from Oak- ville, Oshawa and Toronto, with some Toronto Land Rangers, and Senior Scouts and Rovers from Toronto and Oshawa Groups to participate in an eve- ning's fun. Representatives from Oakville were Judy Bayly, Shir- ley Wilson, Rosemary Regan, and Veronica Faryniuk, accom: panied by Miss Eve Armour and Miss Ruth Reiffenstein. Divisions took place at eight bells, with all the Rangers fall- ing in as one Division and all the Scouts and Rovers falling in as the other. Equal numbers of boys and girls were present, and the different uniforms made an impressive sight. After Divisions everyone sang songs while the movie projector was set up, and then films were shown of Jas- per Park, a stop-off point for the girls going on the 'cruise' to Vancouver with the SRS; Princess Royal (this summer. Also shown tere pictures of the 'cruise' to Halifax two years ago| A three piece orchestra sup- plied the music for Square and Round dancing. Refreshments were served, and then the danc- ing continued, everyone coming to attention when the flag was lowered. They all agreed that they had had a good time, and 'Oakville Sea Rangers are grate- ful to SR.S. Princess Royal for Inviting them to this and so many other functions of their crew. Returning to more local news, Miss Lightbourn's school made an excellent 'ship' for our muster last week. We were pleased to have so much space, and the use of the separate 'cabins' for instructional purposes simplified the work of the Guiders con- siderably. (nstfuction twas (com- tinued in 'the makimg of lan- yards, using fancy knots. Start ing with one hundred feet of fine white cord, the Rangers tle innumerable knots and' come up with some masterpieces of the art of knotting in the form of lanyards. Some of the girls seem to be having a little dif- ficulty in completing these lan- yards at the moment, but the work involved amply repaid when some admiring friend says 'Where ever did you get the lovely lanyard? Instruction. was also given in recognising the rigs of fore-and- aft rigged vessels and square- rigged vessels, which is part of the A.B. Test At the same time in another cabin the 'Ten- der' (recruits) were learning the symbolism and significance of the Union Jack, the Guide World Flag, and the White ¥n- sign. This is part of the pre-enrolment test Musters will continue to be held on Monday evenings at Miss Lightbourn's school, Divisions at 8.00 pm.
