MUSIC ALBUM BY IRVEN FELL In the book, "Concert Compan- fon," by Robert Bagar and Louis Biancolli, the story of the com- posers, both modern ahd ancient is prefaced by a statement, some made by the composer himself or by someone who has written a biography of him. The personal ones--those writ- ten or attributed to the composer --have always interested me, be- cause they seem to interpret the | spirit of principle by which he was moved, what his or her goal in life was in writing music, and the general characteristics of the composer. I am going to set down a few of these statements, and you may be able to judge for yourself from what you know of the mem- tioned composer's works, just how much they fit. To start with I quote Joseph Haydn, born 1732, died 1809. He says, "I know that God has bes- towed a talent upon me, and I thank Him for it. I think I have done my duty, and been of use in my generation by my works. Let others do the same." Now to quote an excerpt from a letter written by Handel, born 1685, died 1759, to Lord Kinnoul after the first London perfor- mance of "The Messiah," at Cov- ent Garden, March 23rd. 1743. "I should be sorry, my Lord, if I YOU CAN TAKE IT FROM ME! THE MOST DEPENDABLE QUALITY AND VALUE IN MEN'S WEAR THAT CAN BE PURCHASED ANY- WHERE. DROP IN AND SEE THE NEW SUMMER LINES --ALL THE LATEST SHADES AND PATTERNS. have only in entertain- ing them; I wished to make them better." Sir Edward Blgar is quoted as saying, "From the point of view of. one person or another I under- stand all my music has been a crime; "Cockaigne," "Corona- tion. and the "Imperial March." Yes, I believe there are a good many people who have ob jected to them. But I like to look on the composer's vocation as the old troubadours or, bards did. In those days, it was no disgrace for a man to be called upon to step in front of an army and Inspire with a song. For my part, I know there are a lot of people who like to celebrate - events with music.
