MERRY CHAPTER 19 People to the right of us, peo- ple to the left of us, into the struggling mob strode the brave fivesome. Mothers, fathers, aunt, uncles and grandparents were out doing their shopping. Little child: ren, big children, fat children, skinny children were milling about. Little groups stood in doorways, medium sized groups stood and gazed into the store windows. Large groups stood on the sidewalk and laughed and chattered. People hurried hither, {hither and yon with arms full of bundles and packages. At the corner, a group of Salvation Army folk stood in a circle and sang "It Came Upon. a Midnight Clear," while happy, jolly, holiday-mind- ed pedestrians dropped nickles and dimes into their good cheer pot" Many groups consisted partly of little children. Some even had babies in arms, but no other group had three cocker spaniels on leashes. Fudgee and Pokee ran on ahead side by side, pulling on the dou- ble leash. Their sleek red coats shone and bits of snow glistened brightly in their fur. Patsy straggled behind us, looking to right and left as she carefully made her way along. "Oh Mamma, look two dogs--no three!" children called to their Mothers as we passed. I think people thought we were from a circus or part of a show, but we cared not. Our goal was Woolworths and We were on OUr Way. Finally we made it and shoved ourselves into the seething mob. We were pushed -from all sides and jostled to and fro by the swaying crowd. I had Fudgee and Pokee as close to me as I could get them. They were practically walking between my legs. Drib- bi and Patsy followed closely "That old toot nearly broke my best toe!" moaned Patsy. 'Bless my beefsteak and call me a weezle but I thought for sure my toe was severed from my foot." "Did you see the creature that tried to attack me?" Fudgee ask- ed. "Oh yes," answered Po. "He was a dragon, or a devil, or a cannibal, or something horrible. I saw his horns and his eyes were green and shot fire. You were very lucky Fudgee that the bigger dragon hauled him off or he'd have eaten you for sure." Once again we tried the stairs and this time were more success- ful. We reached the top without mishap, but the worst was yet to come. A sales girl on her way to the front of the store with a large basket of supplies tried to step over Patsy and failed. Her foot was in mid-air when Patsy suddenly Thursday, June 21, 1951 decided fo change directions iy. out notice. I*went to the rig; Patsy went to the Teft and oy, friend the sales girl went spray. ling flat on her face in the mig aisle. The basket came down vig, a crash. Pickle dishes flay 1 every direction. Jam jars role every way, and sundry other ay. ticles landed here and there aroung and under the feet of st; led shoppers. IIvery person on the maj, floor flocked to the centre People ran up from down and I'm Sure mew ones. came from Queen Street. It demonium let loose. Kind shoppers grovelled abou retrieving bits of merchandise, Some one righted the basket Someone else started poking things back in it. Another ed the salesgirl to her fee. Sey. eral asked her if she were hyp and how it happened. Dribbi and through the crowd with the dogs in our arms and made for Queen Street and home. When we were safely out of the store, we put tho dog down -and hustled along the ¥ without even one look behind us Our shopping spree was o X "Well!" sald Patsy, as we reached our little wee partment "I suppose you could call that a silccessful expedition but it wil take hours to get these leashes untangled. We were all so mudd- eld up by the time we sot out of that roughhouse that I thought Po was Fudgee and I wasn't sure which one was me." "Oh yes! I thought riot," Fudgee said. "A rat--a rat! Who saw a rat?' Popo asked. "No not a rat--a riot! 01" "Oh yes--a rat," Popo said as she crawled into bed. Two tired people and worn out doggies were asleep. rs in Was pap. it was a A riot three 00m, = CANNED INSURANCE Salmon is an animal that lurks in a can, according to Groucho Marx, and only comes out when unexpected company arrives behind. Pat- sy kept wandering across the ais- sle and would nearly trip a busy shopper, as her leash caught her legs. . "Never see so many people in all my life," Patsy gasped from down among the hundreds of ankles and legs. "Slickering tad- poles, but where do you suppose they all came from and where on earth are they all going to?" "Must be a convention," said a convention," echoed "For sure it's a conven- Wé made our way to the base- ment stairs and cautiously des- cended to the lower regions. There was not such a large crowd down there and we were able to spread out a bit. After a lot of looking we finally made two pur- chases and then made way for the stairs again to tackle bravely the main floor once again. Before we got there some old gentleman stepped on ome of Patsy's toes and she let out a howl of pain. We serunched down on the floor to comfort her. While we were thus engaged a small boy took a poke at 'Fudgee and she growled fier- cely at him. "Oh Herman, don't touch the nasty doggie!" warned the irate mother as she dragged the strug- gling Herman bodily away from his prey. Before we knew it we were totally surrounded by a thick mass of onlookers. "What's going on? Who's been bitten?" they asked and other stupid questions too. To escape the mob, I picked up Fudgee and Popo bodily while Dribbi grabbed the whimpering Patsy and we fled down the stairs again to the sanctuary of the basement, Monument built A marble symbolic in surroundings of peace to the living . . . 90 COLBORNE ST.
