It suddenly gave a deep grunt and walked toward them. Willy was for running away, and so was Mrs. Quack. However, there wasn't time, so they both hid as best they could behind Knarf, who felt like running away, too. Meanwhile the hippo- potamus came ambling and grunt- ing toward them, stopping every foot or so to open its mouth in a yawn. When it yawned you could see all the way down its throat. Finally it reached Knarf, with Willy and Mrs. Quack shaking and shivering behind him. "If you're a hippopotamus, go away, please!" Knarf said in as gentle a voice as he could use At this it looked shrprised, then it yawned and said in a deep rumbling voice: "I'd like to take a swim in your pond. Do you mind?" "Well," said Knarf, who thought it wasn't quite as dangerous as it looked, "I guess it's all right. Only IT hope you won't splash. The hippopotamus said he would try to be as splashless as possible. Then he looked behind Knarf to see who was shaking. When he saw it was only a toad and a duck, he nodded politely and said: "Good-afternoon! My name is Hippopotamus. I'm going in for a swim." In The Air There was such a tremendous splash that half the water of the pond seemed to rise up in the air and fall back again. "I'm being very careful," the hippopotamus said. "You should see the splash 1 can make when I really don't care."
