The victory quali fied the locals for O.B.A. pla downs. Frankie May, who limited the Clarksonites to six bingles, spar- ked his own cause at the plate by clouting a pair of doubles and a single. George Stott contributed a double and a brace of singles, while Ed Wollons clouted a lusty triple and Alex Keruluk, Ken Pol- lock and Hank Galbraith had dou- les. Doug Pearce, a former Oak, who looked much better as a Clarkson shortstop than he did as an Oak hurler, was top man for the visi- tors with four, safeties, one a dou- ble. The sailors last week eliminated Port Robinson in their first round series, and are touted as a fast, capable squad. Joe Pickard's boys, how- ever, are rated as the team to beat for the silverware as a re- sult of their victorles over the last year's champion Water- downers, so it should be a tidy tussle. Touching Stan Rowe for three hits and four runs in the opening frame, the Oaks coasted to a 6-1 win over Clarkson last Wednes- day night in the second tilt of their "A" playoff. Top sixteen in med- al play will swing over to match play to decide the championship, won 'last year by Jaek Davison, who again shapes up as the man to beat. However, such shotmak- ers as the Louth boys, Bud Cor- bett and that terrific competitor, Cliff Post, are sure to make de- termined bids. "Postie" is even re- ported to be taking lessons in a last minute attempt to bring his game to a razor-sharp edge, but we are inclined to discount these rumors as being merely the need- ling efforts of his jealous links as- sociates. ® ® Oo Oakville bantams, who will not| take part in the 0.B.A. playdowns this season, will meet the win- ner of the Acton-Clarkson series for the Halton county title very shortly--possibly next week. The midgets, prepping for their first playdown test, are being given a helping hand by Al Yarnell, the offer of whose services was glad- ly accepted by Bud Corbett when Al relinquished the managerial reins of the Oaks. (I J Although far from unknown to anglers who have covered full many a mile of varied waters, white bass are a bit of a novelty in the creek. But fishermen are reporting several good catches of the species recently -- and a gamey fighter it is, too. Several good specimens were taken near the mouth over the weekend, and many an argument developed am- ong anglers as to whatinheck they'd hooked. This fish is a vellowy, grey chap, with the grey fading in spots to clear white. He doesn't break 'water like some of his. cousins, prefering to battle it out below the surface. Our Angling expert Frank Walker, in and out of the office between hol- iday trips, identified him Monday as a silver bass.
