For the last two centu- ries, immigrants have come to Canada from all parts of Asia, bringing with them rich heritage re- presenting many languag- es, ethnicities and reli- gions. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and the theme is "Continu- ing a Legacy of Greatness." Canadians of Asian Heri- tage trace their ancestry from more than 40 differ- ent countries, each with their own unique cultural roots that continue to en- rich our country and make Canada a more vibrant place to call home. This month, I encour- age all Canadians to take time to learn about the many different Asian cul- tures and communities through arts, films, litera- ture and beyond, and em- brace the diversity and compassion that make our country strong. Throughout history, Canadians of Asian heri- tage have made exception- al contributions to the fab- ric of our country. From Margaret Lyons, the first female vice-president of the Canadian Broadcast- ing Corporation (CBC), to Sen. Vivienne Poy, the first Canadian of Asian heri- tage appointed to the Sen- ate of Canada, Canadians of Asian heritage have built a legacy of greatness. As we come together to celebrate what makes Can- ada strong, we must also acknowledge the daily lived realities that Canadi- ans of Asian heritage face. With the rise of anti- Asian racism, xenophobia and discrimination, we must continue to stand to- gether against hate. Our government con- tinues to work hard to com- bat all forms of racism, and we are taking concrete ac- tions to safeguard the rights and well-being of Asian communities in Canada. That is why we devel- oped Canada's first Nation- al Action Plan on Combat- ting Hate, as well as a new Anti-Racism Strategy. Both the action plan and the anti-racism strategy are being developed through community con- sultations that are centred on the lived experiences of communities affected by hate and discrimination in Canada.
