Dermody's To the editor: After reading the front page of the June 9 Oakville Beaver, I can truly under- stand Julie ten Hulscher's frustration regarding her search for affordable hous- ing. I am in the process of re- locating out of Oakville in- to a quieter area north of here to be closer to my fam- ily. Well, good luck to me. Oakville is expensive because if you're not a mil- lionaire, you don't belong here. Homes sell, on the average, for one million- plus. And they just keep building mansions. Bunga- lows seem to be extinct. Renting is out of reach for a lot of people. From what I have experienced during my search for some- thing "affordable," rental units are in excess of $1,500 per month for one bed- room. And some places have additional costs on top of the basic rent, like hydro and parking. So why are rents so high? Pure greed. Greed. And from what I hear, there are bidding wars for rentals, yes rentals. This was unheard of years ago, but -- from what I understand -- seems to be the norm these days. This should not be legal. Doug Ford wants afford- able housing. I would like to know what he considers to be "affordable." Rents need to be con- trolled, and they can. But, in my opinion, the govern- ment has let that slide. Please bring back rent controls. Is it any wonder people are occupying our parks, living in tents? It's because, partly, greedy corporations are al- lowing rents to be so out of reach. No one should be forced to work multiple jobs in order to keep a roof over their heads. Stop the madness. It scares me to think where this will end.
