Karen Brock, president of the Oakvillegreen Con- servation Association board of directors, has re- ceived the Queen's Plati- num Jubilee Award to rec- ognize her service to the Oakville community. Brock has volunteered with Oakvillegreen for 12 years and served as the conservation association's president for 10 years. During her time with Oakvillegreen, Brock has been personally responsi- ble for many green space restoration projects in lo- cal parks and schoolyards. Oakvillegreen staff note that under Brock's leader- ship, the organization has engaged more than 29,800 students in school presen- tations and stewardship projects, added 10,000 square feet of pollinator gardens and planted 35,000 native trees throughout Oakville. Brock has also been rec- ognized for creating Hal- ton's first schoolyard natu- ralization project at Sun- ningdale Public School in 1997. The award-winning pro- ject (Dreamacres) contin- ues today. Darlene Cox, chair of the Seniors Working Ac- tion Group (SWAG), was al- so recently awarded the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Award in recognition of her advocacy for seniors and her volunteerism in Oakville. In her role as chair, Cox has reportedly expanded the influence of SWAG to a much wider community of seniors by organizing -- of- ten with the Canadian As- sociation of Retired Per- sons -- presentations on medical cannabis, medical assistance in dying, pre- scription and over-the- counter medication advice for seniors and issues sur- rounding home care and long-term care. Each presentation was able to reach more than 300 seniors. Cox has also reportedly advised the Town of Oak- ville on how issues con- cerning seniors can best be addressed at local facilities. Among other projects, the SWAG chair is current- ly looking into opportuni- ties that will supply out- door exercise equipment at the Sir John Colborne Rec- reation Centre for Seniors. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Award has been created to mark the 70th anniversary of Queen Eliz- abeth II's accession to the throne. The award recognizes contributions made by Ca- nadians from a broad spec- trum of society.
