- This sepia tone portrait is of Thomas Carlyle and his wife Andrena. It is a formal style portrait with Mr. Carlyle in suit and tie while Mrs. Carlyle wears a dark dress with a white stand up collar that extends down the front of her dress like a tie. The sleeves on her dress are puffed at the shoulder as was the style in the early 1900's.
